Let me just start by saying that I love my tacoma, but I have not been very impressed with the mpg which is around 15 mpg mixed driving. My previous vehicle was an 04 chevy silverado 4x4 extended cab with the 5.3 liter engine. I used to get about the same mpg as the tacoma and actually a little better at times. How is that possible? It's a good v6 but its not even close to the 5.3 in power. I am considering going back to chevy.
I learned from a Chevy mechanic that Chevy vortec v8 engines run real lean and their huge amount of low end torque helps them get good gas mileage.
I saw somewhere about a person strapping their Tacoma to a dyno and it showed an air fuel ratio of 10:1. They is pretty rich so it contributes to the low gas mileage. If you want better mileage have your engine tuned

I'm actually impressed with the mileage on my new Tacoma. I have an 05' Taco DC, 4x4, long bed w/ 4.0L and have been consistantly getting 17-21 mpg! 17 would be stop and go traffic (cold & snow), 21 would be running 65mpg (highway). My older 4 cyl. Toyota truck would only get 21mpg!. I also run 90 octane instead of the 87. I've found the difference in price is only a small percentage. If your only getting 15mpg, I would have things checked out, these new engines should do much better than that.
With conservative driving, I'm getting 22-23 MPG in my 06 Taco 4x2 2.7L Pre-runner extended cab in driving that almost entirely in town. My mileage has gradually improved from around 19 MPG to 22-23 as I've put some miles on the truck. I currently have nearly 2,500 miles on the odometer and use a ScanGauge II to montor mileage, velocity (speed), remaining and cnsumed fuel, radiator temperature and several other performance characteristics. Most of my driving is city (stop-n-go) with the A/C on to ward-off the So. California Summer. I'm looking forward to a road-trip that will reveal the highway mileage attainable in my Taco.

Marc,
It seems like you're experiencing 1 of 2 things - either a malfunction/problem of some sort in your drivetrain, or a heavy right foot. Most here seem to be able to attain at least high teens with the 05/06 V6. I personally have monitored every fillup and have averaged 19.5 MPG in 13K miles over the last 15 months on my 05 Auto V6 DC/LB, and thats in mostly city driving and most of the time the AC is cranked. 15MPG just sounds broken - if you're keeping the revs under 2-2.5k most of the time, it might be about time for a trip to the dealer...
ive been getting 18- 18.5 consistantly with my 06 DC 4x4. I just purchased a K&N drop in filter to see if i can improve that even more. I use premium at every fillup... dont know if that has anything to do with it...

My first tank averaged 18.5 mpg, and that was a mixture of city and freeway driving. After my 1200 "break in" period to get the piston rings seated I expect 20-22 mpg. I think the Tacoma is a perfect mix of power and fuel mileage.
Go back to chevy? If a chevy truck got 30 mpg I still wouldn't buy it. I'm not not trying to start a fight here, but they are the biggest pieces of junk on the road.
I just bought a new Tacoma Crew Cab V6 4.0L and the first tank I only got 15 MPG runing around town with the A/C on using 87 Octane, with the A/C off and the tail gate down running at 57 to 58 Mph I got 23, mostly highway. I've been doing some checking around and found that other owners using a K&N Air intake system and also they installed a Magnafolw exhaust, along with the gas miliage they had better responce in the peddle and more power. If you go to Truck performance.com read the reviews when you check out the Air Intake system. I plan on installing both systems along with a cover over the back, and using the higher octane of course, in about a mouth I hope to have this done.
I get 20 driving easy on the hwy, and 17 mixed driving normal. I use Mobile1, but no mods. I traded a Chevy 2500HD that got 11/15, so I'm rather happy these days.
