Default Tacoma surge

I have 99 Tacoma Ex-cab TRD with a 3.4 and auto trans 75,000 miles. Starts and drives perfect. While accelerating I get surging. If you drive it normal it runs great only when I accelerate like to pass a car I fill the surge. It has no codes and the only time it ever had a code was when I had the TRONADO installed and it gave a bank 1 lean code. The only thing I have done is put a K&N cold air intake on it. Thanks for your help

Try this:

1) Remove the K&N and reinstall your factory air box and filter.
2) Clean the MAF sensor
3) clean the idle control valve.

If it runs fine, throw away the K&N. I had nothing but problems with my truck and the TRD Oiled air filter (same thing as the K&N). The oil from the filter coats the MAF sensor and causes the ECU to incorrectly read the incoming air. This will cause the ECU to inject the incorrect amount of fuel. I had to clean up the MAF and ICV about 3 times, then went back to a stock filter. Never had the problem again on my '01.

The K&N FIPK for the 99 and later trucks has some serious issues.

The internal diameter and shape of the section of the tube that the MAF sensor is installed in is different then the stock tube. This really screws the calibration of the sensor up pretty bad.

Every single truck that I have tuned with one of our Supercharger Fuel kits on that also had the FIPK was very hard to proper tune due to the induced MAF sensor error.

There is no doubt in my mind that that FIPK was the primary source of your problems.

I took the MAF sensor off and cleaned it because it was dirty. After I cleaned it the power was a lot better but I still have the surging going on. I will try the factory air box in a few days and see if it helps. Thanks
