After latest trip to dealer, but before the letter to Toyota
Hi,
I'm coming up on my 15 K service for my 2005 Tacoma and am in the middle of writing a letter to our friends at Toyota. The major items I'm touching on are the main concerns I have with the truck. Sure there are several things I'm not thrilled with, but I'm guessing they aren't going to do anything about the big problems, let alone the small ones...Below are the few things I'm mentioning to them. I'd like for you folks to post any thoughts, and/or experiences. Let me, well us, know what you did, if anything to have them corrected. Thanks in advance! Good luck to you all with your trucks.
LOUD Wind noise, starting at 40 mph and up. Its embarrassing and above the unacceptable level.
Transmission problems: shuddering, harsh downshift at 30-35 mph. I'm really afraid of effects of this later in the life of the truck.
Engine STILL has famous tapping. They changed manifolds, after I, me the consumer had to tell THEM they there was a TSB.

Good luck with your letter, but I think that by now Toyota is concentrating on designing the next generation Tacoma, probably for 09. Every problem you've mentioned, Toyota has known about since the 05 model first hit the streets. If Toyota hasn't done anything about them by now, I don't think they will.

I can't help you with the wind noise except to tell you to invest in and install dynamat or a similar product in the doors, rear cab wall, floor board, and roof. As for the engine tapping, try switching to Mobil 1 full synthetic oil and an M102 high-flow filter. I've heard it eliminates the noise. I've swithched to 93 octane gas and it quieted down a ton. I've got ~1200 miles till my next oil change and I'll be switching to full synth.

Where are you writing to exactly? I'll chime in with nearly identical comments.
I've had the manifold TSB done with little if any noticable change. I run Mobil 1 5W-30, it does not lessen the noise.
Same tranny problem. I have talked to a Toyota mechanic and he said Camry's had a similar problem and it is a software issue in that the trans is not being told to shift soon enough. This makes sense to me as it forever seems to be in the wrong gear requiring excess time to get it to the gear it should be. Which also makes sense for the shuttering. It occurs for me if I get on it too hard (don't baby the pedal) from a dead stop as if the trans is struggling to get in to gear after the fact.
It took Toyota two years for the TSB for the Camry, I'm told.
As for the wind, I've no significant noise. Though I cannot drive with the windows open as I like to do. I guess due to the design of the truck it shovels copious amounts of air of hurricane force in if driving over about 25 MPH.
Don't you believe that Toyota will not listen eventually if enough people speak out. They know word of mouth is important in the industry especially guys and their trucks in the American market. I am proud to say I've talked a co-worker out of buying an FJ and think I've got my brother convinced not to get the new Tundra. I am only ashamed that I've not written sooner. This will be my last Toyota if at least the tranny problem is not addressed. The valve noise I can live with as I don't think it is having any ill effect.
So, please, do send me the address you are writting to. The worst thing we can do is bend over and take it

Bob: Have you checked into the known issue with windshield seals in the early 2005 models? That might be the source of your excessive wind noise issue ...
Re: After latest trip to dealer, but before the letter to Toyota
Hey guys,
Thanks for those who responded. I WILL remember to mention the early problems with the windshield. I bought mine the last day of May 2005, before you ask, I don't know the build date off the top of my head. At this point, you would think it would be burned into my mind, like my S.S # or something...
Thanks to everyone for their thoughts and information.

Thanks,

For the transmission shudder you might have them check the driveshaft. I am having my driveshaft replaced next week for a shudder that I complained about for almost 6 months. Always got the "thats normal routine" from the dealer until it got so bad that the whole truck would shudder when going down the road at any speed. Then they finally had to fess up and admit that it wasn't normal. We will see if the driveshaft fixes it.

i work fo a toyota dealer in baltimore, we actualy had one of the engineers from japan come to our shop for a different problem in with a different line of toyota back in 04, one of our techs asked about that tapping sound in the 4runner with the v6, the engineer at that time said it was a normal sound from that engine and they do not have any plans to change anything and told us that we would hear complaints from tacoma owners when the 05 modle came out and to instruct people that the tap was normal there is nothing to worry about.
