Noob member. Great site.

I have been slowly converting my family fleet to all Toyota.

I have a 2007 Tacoma.

My son drives a 2002 Corolla.

My daughter now drives a 1998 Camry (bought it for her last month after her 95 Ford Escort blew a head gasket).

My wife currently drives a 2004 Chevy Aveo (which she loves), but at the first hint of trouble, I will get her to trade it in for a Yaris.

I'm here because tacomaterritory isn't what it used to be 10 years ago, and there isn't much late model stuff on ih8mud. Anyhow, i've been driving toyota 4x4 trucks for the last 20 years and i've owned probably 15 of them. My current fleet includes my restored FJ40, my daily driver 05 tacoma access cab 4x4 4cyl, my wife's 00 4Runner sport, my rusty but trusty 89 pickup which is now just a plow/yard truck, and a clean rustfree 85 mustang GT for when I feel like going fast.

Hello everyone. I'm Jack and I've driven Toyotas for quite a while. Currently have an 05 Tacoma, Speedway Blue, Double Cab and love it. Had 2 94 22RE's before that and each had well over 200K miles each. Have read posts on here for a long time and gained a great deal of knowlege from all the guys (and gals) on here and have finally decided to join ya! Look forward to chatting with you all!

Bought my first new vehicle 2 months ago: 09 Taco, V6 4X4 TRD Off Road, with MBRP cat back exhaust. I have to admit, it spanks anything the big 3 have put out!

I love this forum, lots of great advice!

Hi everyone,

I'm seriously considering buying an 09 Tacoma, Double Cab, Long Bed, equipped with the Sport Package. I've been trying to comfirm how the new traction control operates on the truck and more importantly how the four wheel drive system operates. A Toyota mechanic send me this email detailing the operation and systems involved. Can anyone shed any light on whether this is true? Should I be asking questions at a different part of this website?

Thanks

Mechanics take on the systems:

The actual TRAC system is a two wheel drive system. Instead of the mechanical limited slip with a clutch plate in the rear differential, it does use an electronic limited slip. That system uses the ABS system to pulse the brakes on a wheel that has lost traction in order to slow it down as well as send power back to the wheel with traction. The TRAC system will also throttle back the engine until traction is regained. This setup allows the vehicle to have an open rear differential which has less moving parts and in turn less stuff to break.

In four-wheel drive the system operates very similar to TRAC except it now looks for loss of traction in the front drive wheel as well as the rear drive wheel. They just don't call it TRAC when the vehicle is in four wheel drive.

So the answer is that TRAC only works in two wheel drive, but four wheel drive employs a very similar setup.

They haven't always operated like that. They used to have a mechanical limited slip. It doesn't have a set amount of torque transfer, but one of the demonstrations they show us at training is a truck with one wheel on rollers. Without the limited slip on the tire on the rollers just spins and the truck goes nowhere. With the limited slip turned on, the tire on the rollers, spins and then slows down as the brakes are applied until the wheel on the ground moves the truck of the rollers. It will keep applying more and more brake pressure to the spinning wheel until the wheel with traction moves the truck forward. We took a Tundra which uses the same system through an off road course at a training class. At some points the course was designed for the extreme, which was the right front tire, and left rear tire both in the air with only the other two on the ground, and the system handled it very well. We didn't get stuck.

Hi all,

I got my new 2009 Taco this weekend. Got the DC with the TRD Sport package. What a nice truck, and I certainly like it much better than my 2004 DC TRD Off-Road. Not sure how it will do off-road but it seems like Toyota finally fixed that nasty problem with the seats always being uncomfortable

Now, what kind of mods have people done on the 2009's and where can I find a FSM for it?

Hey guys,

Found this forum while puttering around on the net. I work at TMMAL on the 1GR line, so if any of you have the 4.0L V-6, there's a 50% chance that I put the pistons in it. If you have any engine questions, feel free to send them my way.

Angry Re: Welcome to TundraSolutions.com! - New Members/Tacoma Owners Introduce Yourself He

Hello and thanks for the welcome. I have been a Toyota truck rider for 17 years. I still drive my 83 sr5 and enjoy it. I have been able to keep it on the road only for the grace and effectiveness of Rust Check and Krown Rust Proofing available here in Canada. Like all Toyotas these were very susceptible to rust. I truely believe that Toyota Motors should/should have addressed these rust issues long ago in the engineering/manufacturing stage. I am now looking at a 2001 Tacoma Double Cab 4D with 87000 km or approx. 54,000 miles. The body is mint has is the drivetrain, interior etc.The frame however is another story. Completely rusted, but tested and pasted the frame inspection for now. It will no doubt need to have the frame, lower control arms, rear springs etc replaced in the future. Very sad that this will have to be done but very glad Toyota is addressing the issue. Wouldn't it be cheaper in the long run to do it right, right from the beginning. Looking forward to all comments and replys.

Hey hey, I'm a new member from the East Coast of Canada. Currently driving a '01 Ford EXPLODER Sport but am in the midst of picking out my Tacoma and doing some research (which is how I found this site.) Hoping to learn lots here, and get myself a new rig in the next few months. Aiming for the double cab 4x4 SR5...but we'll see what happens.

I am a lurker that decided to join. I have a 2006 tacoma 4x4 v6 sr5 quad cab. I just roled 30,000 and changed all the fluids to synthetic other than that she is stock as a rock. I am now looking for a new set of tires something in the 265 75 16 AT. In the past I had a 1978 2wd with a 22r had to replace the contacts in the starter every 30k but other than that great truck just hit to much stuff with it and the body was falling apart. Then I had a 95 taco 2wd same problem with the contacts in the starter every 40 to 50,000 miles but they did seal the starter mad it better other than the at 200k had to replace the distributor and the ac went out and 3 shops failed to fix it then at 240k the front right tie rod end broke and the driver side tire literally fell to the ground I was parked at the time I fixed it my sister now has the truck they use it to take their boat back and forth to the boat ramp now at 280k. The 2006 is by far the best riding and best designed of the 3 generations of trucks I have had and it is the only one I bought new. Looking back at 20 years of toyota trucks I cant wait to see what they have in store for me in another 20 years.

Hello,
I found this site through a link in TacomaWorld; I've been in that "family" for about 6 months now.
I bought an 08, Indigo Blue, DC, LB, TRD Sport last July and love it. We owned a 97 Dodge Ram for 11 years prior to this. It was a nice vehicle with relatively no problems until the last year and even that was nothing major. After my wife got her Highlander, I started scoping the Tacomas and wouldn't rest until I got one. It was a good choice. The Tacoma is more my size...I don't need a full size truck and the DC is so much nicer than the Club Cab (AC) with a family. 4WD isn't bad either!

So far I have installed an Undercover tonneau, Toyota side steps, Vent Shades, Husky Liners, sport pedals, seat covers, and a stainless exhaust tip.
With income tax, I'll be getting a factory skid plate and possibly a scanguage.

If you read all this, thanks for listening!
Gene
