The result of this mod will be factory Tacoma DRL's. This means that your front turn signals will burn steady, until you turn on your headlights. When your headlights go on, the DRL's go off. If your parking lights are on, the DRL's stay on. If your parking brake is on when you start your truck, the DRL's are off until you pop the E-brake. If you put your E-brake on while the truck is running, the DRL's do not go off, they stay on.
DISCLAIMER: I take NO responsibility for any damage that happens to your vehicle as a result of this mod. I can't install it for you and there are too many variables that may happen to you and your procedures, but by doing the below I now have DRL's and an undamaged truck.
OK, I cannot take credit for this PRERUNNERSPT on ToyotaNation figured this one out. However his writeup left something to the imagination so I am expanding upon it, not to mention sharing with the TS people! You DO NOT need to cut or splice ANY wires!
First off you will need to order the factory Toyota parts. You need 2 parts (1) # 82241-04030 and (1) #81980-35020. # 82241-04030 is a small jumper harness with 2 plugs on it and # 81980-35020 is the DRL/flasher relay.
I ordered mine from
Genuine Toyota Parts and Accessories wholesale to the public., this is Toyota of Dallas parts division. They know what these particular parts are for, since so many who did this mod. got the parts from them. I was told 4-6 weeks to get the parts made (again alot of guys did this mod) but it was actually 3 weeks to get the parts in and another 6 days to get them to my door.
Plug in the part number into the 'search by factory part number' line and the parts name will show up along with the price and description. The flasher relay has a few different names, but the part numbers are all the same item. The wire is listed as WIRE,RELAY. The flasher I chose by description is listed as "Electrical - Chassis electrical - Flashers - Turn signal flasher Turn signal flasher, tacoma, w/vsc 2005 - 2006" even though my Taco didn't come with VSC. VSC equipped Tacos have DRL's, hence the description. The parts cost $11.14 for the wire and $30 for the flasher. Delivered to my door it was a little over $51.
The process sounds more intimidating than it really is. It is common sense, there is only ONE way this gets put together.
Take off the lower kick panel. You need to pop up the foot rest on the floor and there is a small plastic 'nut' that you unscrew. Then you can take off the panel.
Then you need to take off the lower panel from the driver's side dash. The little change area near your right knee pops off. There are two bolts that hold the lower part on. One is hidden behind a little cover, just pop that down and it is a 10mm bolt. The other was hidden behind the kick panel. Don't forget to unhook the hood release from the panel. The rest of the panel is held on by clips that pop out from the main dash. Depending on what you have for accessories, you will have to unplug some wires. I only had power mirrors, so they were unplugged.
Set the parts aside. You will need to unbolt the junction block to gain enough room for access. Again there are 10mm bolts and nuts here. One nut on the top LH side, and one on the bottom RH side. Unbolt the 10mm bolt on the bottom LH side (actually remove the little bracket there, two bolts) The junction block is the item that has all the wires and some fuses in it. I suggest unplugging all the wires from the front so that you can flip the juction box down for even more access. Don't worry, there is only ONE way the plugs go in, each one is different so you can't mess them up.
Look on the back of the block. The light gray/tan relay box is the flasher unit. It even says flasher on it along with Denso. If in doubt activate your turn signal/four ways and feel it. You should feel it 'clicking' along with your signal sound. I had trouble with this because I thought it was held in by a positive locking clip. It is not, it is only held in by friction fit. It is nearly impossible to pull it out by using your fingers. I had to put a screwdriver under it while pulling it to get enough leverage so it finally popped out.
Look at the plugs on the new wire relay harness. You will be able to match one of the plugs to the area you removed your stock flasher unit. Plug it in. You should have noticed that there is a plastic "L" bracket attached to the wires. This attaches to the hole at the bottom inside(what would be towards your feet and facing the firewall) end of the junction box.
One of the other ends plugs into the end of the new DRL flasher. Plug it in. Again, don't worry, there is only ONE way this works. You can attach the new DRL flasher unit to the steering column side of the junction box. There should be a "bracket" molded in there. Slide the DRL flasher unit bracket over this junction box bracket until it clicks and is locked.
OK, we are two thirds done! The last plug goes next. Under where you removed your stock flasher unit, there is a set of wires. Under that set of wires is a gray plastic plug with no wires leading into it. The plug blocks off the area we need. Remove the plug. It isn't going to go easy. I used a set of small needle nose, hooked pliers. I had to work at it, I think this has a positive locking clip, but can't be sure as I gouged the plug plastic with the pliers. The last plug from the new wire harness goes here. Plug it in.
Bolt your junction box back into the dash. Remember to plug any connectors back in before you do this (if you unhooked any from behind). Check your work, start up the Taco and marvel at your expertise! Enjoy your new DRL's.
Reverse the disassembly procedures and put everything back together. You're in business now!
Many people who aren't mechanically inclined have done this mod. with great success, and they did it without detailed directions. It is a pretty common sense modification. If you have any doubts about your abilities, have someone else do it, or don't do it at all. After all, you are messing with the main electrical system in the truck.
That being said, I now have factory Toyota DRL's which look SWEET! This gives me a slight edge on the street, where there are so many NDF's. NDF stands for Non Driving F$#*!
I apologize for not having pictures, but the UPS man left my package on my porch, where it wasn't discovered until 4:30pm. I was excited to start and didn't even think about taking pics until it was dark out. Again thanks to PRERUNNERSPT from ToyotaNation for having the balls to figure this out! I just took his good idea and made it a little better for you!
