This is a discussion thread titled "Anyone traded in there Tacoma for the new Tundra?", within the Tacoma forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
Re: Anyone traded in there Tacoma for the new Tundra?
After two weeks with the Tacoma, I'm convinced I made the right choice trading the 07 Tundra. Make sure you take a nice, long test drive in an 07 Tundra if you're thinking of trading your Tacoma for one.
Re: Anyone traded in there Tacoma for the new Tundra?
I traded in my 2002 Ranger Edge for my new 07 Tundra Crewmax. I love this truck! I am averaging about 15-16 mpg over about 8 tankfulls of gas. Not bad for a 5.7 liter 381 HP engine! This new Tundra is only 9 inches wider than my Ranger but a lot taller and longer. I really like the roominess and power of the mighty Tundra. I test drove a Taco but just was not impressed with the power. The engine made a bunch of noise but didn't provide a whole lot of get up and go. I would never trade in my new Tundra for a Tacoma....that's just nuts.
Re: Anyone traded in there Tacoma for the new Tundra?
Local So Cal dealers are heavily discounting the Tundra Double Cab 4.7L V8 models. I see them advertised in the local paper every week for $23,995. I noticed the 4.7L is rated at 18 mpg highway, and the larger 5.7L is rated at 20 mpg. The brand new 6-speed auto tranny (old generation 5-speed with the 4.7L) on the 5.7L engine must be the reason. I love the new Tundra, but no real need for a full size truck, and the current high fuel prices are not helping. Toyota needs to offer a Turbo-Diesel engine option on the new Tundra ASAP. I would give the new Tundra a serious look if a more fuel efficient turbo-diesel engine option was available.

Take it from someone who couldn't wait to buy the all new 05 Tacoma, and then had to deal with all of the bugs. Give Toyota another year to work out any of the problems on the new Tundra before you buy one.

Agreed, never buy the first year of a new model you never know what you are getting into (kinda like new Microsoft OS's), although the only bug I've had was with the clutch squeak which they finally fixed with a TSB. I might be getting the rear suspension noise, not sure if its that or partly due to the Retrax, junk in the bed or the rack. Only hear it on the worst of these VT roads.
I wouldnt consider trading in my Tacoma for a Tundra. I dont need the extra space in the bed, nor do I want to put up with parking the thing or its gas mileage. They are a great looking truck though.

Re: Anyone traded in there Tacoma for the new Tundra?
I test drove both the Tundra and Tacoma before I bought. Tacoma was nice but didn't have the comfort and legroom of the Tundra. In Canada, you can't get power adjustable seats in the Taco and I felt a little cramped (I'm 6'2" w long legs)
So, Tundra it was. Very happy. Very comfortable and I'm getting 17 MPG average mixed driving.

Taco is nice, but I'm happy with Tundra.
I'm 6' 2" w/long legs. The Tacoma fit me better. I test drove the Tundra twice. I didn't care for the plastic knobs and mileage under 13 mpgs with both trucks. Also, I have two friends that have not got over 16 mpgs on the highway and they both average under 14 mpgs. I got better from my old F250 V10. I would rather have a true 3/4 ton truck than a new Tundra if I was going to have a full size truck. I really like my new Tacoma.
Re: Anyone traded in there Tacoma for the new Tundra?
Love the way the new Tundra looks, but wouldn't want to feed it with gas @ $3.50/gal. I'm happy with my Tacoma, but if I had the need for a full-size p/u, the Tundra would be at the top of my list!
Re: Anyone traded in there Tacoma for the new Tundra?
Just traded in my Tacoma (2.7, A/C, SR5, pre-runner, silver streak) for a Tundra (4.7, DC, TRD, XM,Timberland Mica). Payment was not much difference (under 50 bucks). I already had around 31k on the odo, so I wanted to trade it in before the 36k. Toyota is trying really hard to get people into these trucks and will do just about anything to get you into 1.
Re: Anyone traded in there Tacoma for the new Tundra?
i would love to trade my truck for the new tundra... but the gas prices nowadays is killing my wallet... unless they can match the mpg of the taco, i see no future with a tundra... Maybe if i won the lotto lol

I have an 05 Taco and it's been pretty much worry free for me....except for that 90-year-old lady who turned left in front of me. $5k later and the truck was good as new. I think it's a crap shoot with the first model year of anything.

Tacoma Pros:
· Fully loaded 4x4.
· Interior felt well thought out, very functional.
· Had good overall flow to exterior design.
· Handling was smooth, great off road capability.
· Size made it manageable in city.
· Easy oil change.
· Power to truck ratio not bad.
· Fit nicely into garage.
· Like the TRD tint it came with.
· Snug top fit like a glove, although it had minor leakage through the third taillight.
Tacoma Cons:
· Had an unsmooth transmission shift from a dead stop (Almost as if it didn’t slip into the proper gear for a second or two). Hard to explain, No dealer could find any apparent fault. More noticeable in summer time heat. Felt just like transmission slip to me. (Main reason for going for the trade).
· Couldn’t turn off VSC when not in 4WD mode.
· Gas mileage not as good as it could be, plus premium recommended
· Ghastly cruise control, always down shifted, even on the slightest of hill grades.
Tundra Pros:
· 5.7L V8, coupled to the 6 speed tranny makes for one smooth, throw you’re arse in the seat ride. It’s a truck, but it’s just plain fun.
· Can turn VCS off at any time (now I can do donuts….)
· The freaking cab room is unbelievable (main reason for purchase). Plenty of room for new baby car seat, and gear.
· NAV system grows on you. Not like I get lost in my own city, but I am a gadgets guy, and the more I use it, the more fun it is. Will be usefull on our cross country trip in June.
· The Sound system is very clear for factory. It should for 12 SPKR.
· Back up camera is an A+. Almost required since truck is so huge.
· Bluetooth actually works very, very well. Sounds reproduction is crisp, clear, and callers don’t even know I’m on a hands free set.
· The moonroof was a don’t care when purchased, but now that I have it, I use it. It is great to have for the Phoenix summer nights. Plus I routed my Sirius antenna through it.
· Rear power window goes hand in hand with moonroof.
· It’s huge, but the turn radius is very impressive.
· Massive amounts of storage space.
· 8 way power adjustable seat.
· The rear seats are full size and they recline (I do sit in back seats before I buy).
· Gas mileage reasonable for such a large truck. Not bad, unless you hammer is all the time.
· Tonneau cover is a great addition, but it takes about 2” from rear view.
· Cruise Control work very well, with proper downshifing at the right interval.
Tundra Cons:
· Price, could have probably waited, and maybe negotiated a better deal.
· Exterior a little bland. Lines to me don’t seem as polished as the Tacoma, but the TACO only appeared to me that way due to the Snug Top. Gave it a complete look.
· Not sure if it fits in my garage yet (too much stuff in it now).
· Interior dash / controls not quite as well laid out as TACO in my opinion. Cup holders are too far away from driver. The volume control seems WAAAY over there (but it’s a bigger truck). Fortunately, I do have steering wheel controls, so that is a moot point.
· Could have put drink holder on back of console like in the TACO. The rear does have folding console in the seat, but since our Child seat is right in the middle, it’s inaccessible.
· Heated mirrors and Cold start…for Phoenix..who cares. But I have it.
I did like my TACO, it was very well balanced for what it was. But, in the end, since we recently had our first baby, and maybe will have one more, I wanted something with more room. Hence, the CrewMax (Not an SUV guy, definitely not Mini Van).
Plus, the transmission thing made me a bit skeptical of my TACO. It may have been nothing, but I’m an engineer….a really, really anal engineer, and crap like that just bugs me.
The power and torque on the Tundra just laid the wasted the Tacoma, and the TACO wasn’t’ wimpy.
The only flip flop thing I floundered on was going from the 4x4 to the 4x2. I never had a real reason to use my 4x4. Indeed, I bought it to tow my quads for camping. But in the two years I had it, I never HAD to use it. But it did work well, and I like to have it for the “Just in Case” clause.
That being said, I chose the 4x2 due to the gas mileage (and availability, very few 4x4 Non-limited version of CrewMax around at time of purchase. Now there’s a few..go figure). A 4x4 Crewmax was slated for 14 City, 18 HWY. That was just a bit too low for my taste. Again, I can get the 16 mpg in extreme city driving with the current 4x2. So I did not loose much going from my TACO to the Tundra.
Plus, I have already taken my truck offroad, and feel safe that I will not have any issues. If I can take my 2wd ford escort station wagon up one side of 4 peaks mountains and down the other (Largest peaks in the phoenix area), this truck will not have any issues.
The tacoma had it's place, and now the Tundra suits my needs, plus it's really fast...I'm sorry, I have a speed issue.... and really like to drive the new Tundra..(fast). It's not quite like comparing apples to apples here. They are different trucks, and perform differently. I don't regret the trade. Do I regret paying 40G's? A Little, but I did that when I bought the TACO too. To keep it in perspective though, I regret buying anything that I have to spend money on..if it's not the best. Even a $60 dollar pair of shoes..I did buy the Tundra, however, becuase I liked my TACO. The TACO was my first Toyota, and that's what brought me back.
Finally, who can resist the new car smell??? It’s like pheromones for men!!! WOOT!
Hope this helps in some way, cause if not, it sure was a waste of a whole lot if typing.
Disclaimer for the flamer…These opinions are my own, and reflect how I see things on the vehicles I own(ed) ..Peace!
Re: Anyone traded in there Tacoma for the new Tundra?
The tundra still have a place in my heart. I'm just waiting for what they will do for the 2009 models. With all the hypes of diesel and hybrid for a tundra, I'm going to hold out until then. Even with the current Tundra lineup, I'm really impressed with it. My 2005 Tacoma is soo far still trouble-free, and it still makes me happy everytime I get in and drive. Soo i might just end up keeping this one, and purchasing a 2009+ tundra instead.
