This is a discussion thread titled "Bike Mount with Truck cap?", within the Tacoma forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
Eventually I want to add a cap and also be able to mount my bike inside. With the mount on the rail the handlebars stick above the roof. This would not allow me to put the bike in the bed. I was wondering if here is a mount that would allow me to do this.
I added a 16" extension to my bike rack and it gives me enough room to carry two bikes and open the lid window and the bedgate. If I had it installed presently, I'd give you a picture, but it can be easily done with steel channel.
This is what I wanted to do as well, install a cap to lock the bikes inside. Unfortunately I found Id have to get a high rise cap, which I think look pretty ugly, to clear the saddles, and the cap door would cause problems with the aero bars on the road bike since they extend out. If you have a long bed it might not be as much of a problem. Sure I could drop the saddles down and rotate the bars, but I sure dont want to put up with that every time I load the bikes up. would add too much time to load/unload the bikes, plus the wear and tear on the seatpost and aero bars.
The problem with putting bikes up on top of a cap is that they are too darn high, hard to load/unload, plus you'll have to worry about clearance issues. The Yakima/Thule track systems are great though, I have the Yak installed on my Retrax tonneau cover and it works out great. The only negative so far is when the rack is on the truck, it makes it a little difficult with getting to the tool box (under the Retrax can) and other stuff since you have to lift a leg to get over the bars. But I can live with that.

Do you have the long bed?
I take the air out of my fork, and drop the saddle

Wear and tear on the seat post? Silly carbon fiber, get some CF grease with the little plastic beads in it, and dont worry about it. Or go Thomson like me on my XC rig. Though I wouldn't use AL on my road bike. Even though its lighter than the EC70. MMMMMmmm... I love Independent Fab. titanium roadie frames
You could go get laughed at by all your friends and just get an adjustable stem

I'm not sure if it's made anymore or not, but you see them come up on ebay every so often. There is a mount on there right now. It could be used separately without the track. It's worked out great for me - works with mtb, cx, road, and tri bikes. Just mount it far enough away from the tailgate to give room. Also, the mounts can rotate so the bars/fork can turn to the side without loosening anything. On the Tacoma, I'm not sure about height though, but there's plenty of room in the Dodge and should be in the Tundra as well.
