Just the damn lawmakers up in Austin (state capitol) playing kids games.
There was a vote set for redistricting some of the political lines today and the Democrats didnt like how it was gonna turn out. So a "bunch" of them just decided to play "hooky" today so that vote couldnt take place. Childs play.
Typical Texas BS.

that's politics. the reps do it every time they take the reins, by redistricting or writing new rules for voting. the dems do it by boycotting the same. kinda hard to run a country (or a state) when large groups of people have only their future house or senate seats in mind rather than the future of the state.
...something like this recently happened in anchorage...the republicans (then in control) changed a few rules regarding vote counting so they could get a republican mayor elected...based on their new rules, a democrat won. now the republicans are trying to get the rule thrown out.
crybabies...

Can you just imagine the cost of all of this? DPS troopers shaking down wives and children? Staff working over to assist their fleeting reps? Lost time, lost legislation and lost minds?
The whole thing stinks and I work the for the state.

Come on guys...there are bigger fish to fry here!
Ditto.
As I understand it they (the cry babies) have missed out on voting on over $700,000,000 worth of bills that the Feds "WERE" gonna send us. That is supposed to constitute one half of all the $ that the Feds were gonna send our way. As far I am concerned these members (the missing Demos) have breeched there contract to the state voters by staging this "shananigan". They are now COSTING us money. You and I, fellow Texans are gonna have to pay for this in the end. Its just a bunch of BS.

yep...there are bigger fish to fry...than redistricting. mainly, education and the like. in case y'all didn't read the article closely, the republican party wants to get the democratic party back in the house so they can redistrict and force the democratic party to give up 5 house seats. the democratic party on the other hand is continuing to do business in their surrogate offices, while the republican party is expending quite a bit of your tax dollars to corral the democrats and force them to lose the vote.
i am not sure which party is being more irresponsible. incidentally, if this vote goes through, you are losing a devil's advocate voice to the majority by another 5 seats, which is not going to help you in the long run. because the ruling party has intentionally placed a foregone vote in their favor on the agenda, the party that seems to be interested in working on running the state is protesting by blocking a few bills. the ruling party then gripes that the democrats are being irresponsible for not coming in to lose the vote, and wants them arrested...something about not fulfilling their representative duties, when in fact they are performing their elected duties...just in a different location. it's the old "don't catch him for giving an intern a shot in the mouth, catch him for lying about it" trick.
i fail to see how this is irresponsible. rather than jump on the republican's carefully prepared bandwagon (which a few of you are), maybe y'all should consider calling your elected reps and telling them to "get on with it!" as they are not being paid to redistrict for their benefit or use state resources to bring the other team back to lose a game, they are being paid to run your state.

I can see some of your points, however just because somebody doesnt like something thats about to happen (redistrict), doesnt mean you just dont show up to work that "week". Also remember that the Democrats have been "in power" here for the past 30 years. During that time the Republicans have never played "hooky" when there was a vote that they didnt favor.
I just think its irresponsible for our lawmakers to play "games" like this when there are OTHER issues that were to be voted on during this past week besides the redistricting.
BTW I also work for a governmental entity and get to see these "games" played firsthand. I have never been impressed with them, as I believe they do not SERVE the public in the least. Its a game thats all about "you scratch mine, and i will scratch yours". The worst is its all about getting re-elected and has nothing to do with the "public good".
BTW I am not a Republican, nor a Democrat. I dont think I have talked about politics this much in years.

yeah, politics always gets the ol' hackles raised. guess i've seen quite a bit of "re-dis-trick-ing" lately and what i've seen has been fairly one-sided, so i tend to respond one-sided. of course...don't get me started on tax-and-spend politics, either
you've educated me on the second-largest state in the union , i actually thought it was generally republican-run! i did not know that, and it definately changes my opinion of the situation...it may well be that the republican party needs a few more seats to be able to effectively play devil's advocate and balance the democrats.
i'd say you nailed it with your third paragraph...there's a lot of that here in ohio with the base-related entities, unfortunately.
the reason i said i didn't see why it was irresponsible was from the part of the article which described the absentee party as continuing work despite their relocation, which i would say is fairly responsible, if wishful thinking, since presumably anything they thought up would need to be put to...a...vote !
It's all cyclical. I have worked in government most all my life in one form or another and the money wasted is outrageous.
As one party rolls in they spend millions changing what the other party did and then the same things happen when the cycle swings back.
Here in Galveston we would get the short end of the stick in the proposed plan. However, that is no excuse to miss out on other monies that need to be handled in the other bills.
Just a big mess. Of course had the Republican's ran out of state they most likely would not have picked a Holiday Inn!
