Angry Not so nice dealers....

I had a friend of mine take her 4runner to a dealer her in SA. Not to mention names but, the initals are cav. toy. Her check engine light came on along w/ her traction control light. The dealer told her it was b/c she was blonde and female could not put her gas cap on right. Has anyone heard of this before and where else in SA can she go????

Question Have heard of gas cap issues

I'm not saying the dealer was right, but I read a story about a guy who rented a rental car and got a check engine light because he didn't tighten the gas cap until it clicked. It makes some sort of seal/vacuum. I doubt that has anything to do with traction control. Does she still have a problem or has it gone away now?
I live in Houston so I can't recomend a dealer. Good Luck!

the blonde female thing was uncalled for, if they really did say that...on those grounds alone, find a different shop!

...but yes, in modern vehicles a loose gas cap will cause a CEL condition, that's part of the inspection routine when you get your emissions checked.

sorry, can't help regarding the traction control...my 00 tun isn't cool enough to have that ! maybe someday i'll frankenstein it in ...

I have gotten excellent service from Alamo Toyota. They have taken care of everything I have thrown at them.

Ditto on Alamo. I've taken mine there twice and both times they did the work no questions asked. I cant remember the service writers name right now (Chuck I think) BUT make sure you/she mention you are a member of Tundra Solutions. They do view this site.

I have heard 1 local person say Universal was good, but 2 others said no. Havent heard anything good or bad about Red McCombs (although personally I have had bad dealings there in the past ).

Default Gas Cap

Well the gas cap part is correct. Not having the gas cap on correctly, can cause some "driveability" problems with the engine. I have bought three Toyotas from the same dealer here in Houston. They have been great. On each occassion, on delievery of the new vehicle they have mentioned to be sure to put on the gas cap, and turn it until you hear it click a few times; otherwise the dash light would often come on.

She should have just sucker punched um, for calling here dumb blonde. It doesn't matter if it was true or not. LOL

As other people have stated, the gas cap can cause the CEL light to come on.

What was the name of the service writer there? (feel free to PM it to me if you want). I usually go there and am curious who it might have been. I have talked with several of them and a few are just downright clueless with some things.

The guys gave her the run around all day long even making her late to relieve me @ work.. Which brings me to the point of the whole thing, idid not get out of ther until midnite.... The truck is still under waranty and she still had to pay $50 for what i do not know...

The last time I went there for service was to get my seatbelts replaced, rear window latches, and the antenna TSB all replaced under warranty. I had it scheduled for 8am one day. I told the main service writer there that I needed it back by noon because I had a lunch meeting with a prospective employer (important not to miss!). Needless to say I called them at noon and they said it wasn't quite ready yet. I told them okay, but I needed to be at work by 5PM and needed the truck by 4 to be able to get there on time. I call at 3:30 and he doesn't answer. I finally reach him at 4:20 and he says that it is almost ready! I get there at about 4:40 and he says another 15 minutes.

Well I get the truck at 5:10 and his excuse was that the antenna TSB takes very long to do because they have to remove the whole dash and route the wire blah blah. He later looked at the service slip and then told me that they didn't have the correct antenna and it was on order....so 9 hours at the dealer to do the seatbelts and window latches....when they knew that I had important things to do that day.

And to make things even better, when I take a look at the service slip, they only billed 1.6 hours of labor! &#*(@&#*(@&##@#

I haven't been back there in a while. I was also glad that I received one of their surveys in the mail to give feedback on my experience that day.

I'm surprised to hear this about Cavender Toyota. I've been there 3 times for service and they've been nothing but courteous & professional toward me and other customers that I observed. Same for the parts dept., the counter guys are courteous to all people who come in. In fact, my Tundra purchase was the best vehicle purchase experience I've had in my life because of the great attitude of the internet salesperson at Cavender. The Cavender's go back many years when they originally sold Oldsmobiles over on Broadway. Historically, Cavender has always had a reputation for good service and respect for customers.
That said, every organization has its share of a**holes. Communication is a 2-way street. If the employee did in fact disrespect your friend, then she should have immediately addressed this with someone in management.

Many people do not know that they can take their Tundras to any Toyota Dealership to have warranty repairs done, other than where they originally purchased their vehicle.

I have to give my compliments AGAIN to Gordon (asst Service Manager) at Alamo Toyota (sister dealership to Tejas Toyota here in SA). I took my truck in Monday afternoon for the O2 sensor and a bad hesitation problem. Had it back first thing Tueaday morning.

BTW he was telling me that the GSM (Gulf States Platinum Warranty) is as close to bumper to bumper coverage as you can get. I have that warranty and it even covered my bad O2 sensor replacement.

Thank you GORDON at Alamo Toyota.
