Default Fishing on the Trinity 1940's

RE: Buzz, RE: Possum, RE: ...snip... "Uh [SAT] , you could edit your posting and tell about the fish you caught on the BS Thread."

Speakin' o' Fish Stories, any old Texas trot-line fisherman out there? Lazy way to fish back before it were a sport & fried catfish, tators, & mustard greens made the meal, no money for pork chops, etc.

After work during the week, take a long 50 yard length of thick strong cord & stretch it out. Tie onto to it every three feet or so a smaller cord with the hook & small lead weight; make this length about a foot. If you got the money add a swivel, but we didn't. After finished, wrap the main cord around a scrap piece of 2X4, and set the hook on the end of the board when you come to that part of the rig. Continue to wind the cord & set the hooks till your done.

Take nice river like the Trinity, deep, but not too wide. Tie one end of the trot line around a sapling on the bank. Get in the boat and paddle across letting out the line & baiting the hook, pencil-size earthworms my choice, till you come to the other bank. Tie off the far end of the trot line to a sapling & paddle back.

Find a nice shade tree & light up the pipe, roll the cigarette, etc., & take the iced tea out & pour into the mason jar & a piece of mint for flavoring. Relax, smoke the pipe, drank the tea, waste some time as you get it all back at the end of your life -old Phoenician proverb.

Run the line with the boat every hour or so. Take off the cats, re-bait the hooks. Put the cats on stringer by the river bank. When ready to go, put the cats in a tow-sack (some call 'em gunny-sacks), & put into the warsh tub with a little river water in the trunk of the ol' 1936 Plymouth (they made these onced).

Take 'em home, clean 'em & eat 'em. It weren't a sport but it put food on the table waay back when.
Ahhh Texas catfish, they gotten bigger you know.

Cheers,
-RH

Hey RH - I am a "jug-liner" myself. Take a Clorox bottle, some tarred line (180 lb test), 5 hooks (circle hooks), and half a brick for a weight and you are set. It is a great means of puttin some meat on the table. I have had some 300+ lb nights. Takes a little while to clean 300+ lbs of fish though. In the wintertime if I don't catch 100+ lbs a night, it was just a bad trip. That ain't no BS either. If I don't go back to the coast to catch some kingfish this weekend I think I will go catfishin. YeeeeHaaaaw

Good luck when you go, let us know.

Buzz I will take some pics of some of my catfishin trips so I can take these posts out of the BS thread.

She sure does! I think it is because she never really had any luck with a rod and reel. Plus she loves that Trinity River!

Reading these postings has me wanting to wet a hook!

Last weekend I went catfishing for the first time since last November and only managed to catch 40 lbs. Was a terrible night for results (lbs), but hey I just need to find the fish again. After all it has only been 9 months since I catfished last. Won't be to long and the cold weather and fish will be back in there winter pattern.

Default Fish report #1 (of 2)

Took the Tundra down to San Diego (flawless performance, natch)to go tuna fishing out of San Diego on Wednesday. Landed 4 fair sized Albacore, and lost a 40-50 lb. Bluefin right at gaff after a 30 minute tug of war with it...

Tomorrow morning........Mako shark fishing off of La Jolla. You guys who soak bait, stay tuned. This trip could be more on the exciting side than a tuna tug.........

Well i'm down to 14 quart size bags + 1 gallon size bag, BUT I think I have enough for our meet anyway. Oh ya I also have 4-5 quart size bags of redfish too.

I went catfishing 2 weekends ago, but had a slow night, only caught 40 pounds. That is slow. In the wintertime if I can't catch 100 pounds it isn't worth going.

I've got enough for a "kingsize" fishfry anyway.
