Britt Bailey came to Texas in the year 1818 several years before Stephen F Austin brought the "Old 300" familes. Austin wanted god fearing, upstanding citizens in the group he brought to settle Texas. Britt was anything but that. He was a mean man, fought hard talked hard and drank hard. Austin would have not chosen him to be part of the original 300 families but Britt convinced Austin to let him stay. He even fought the indians along side of Austin. Britt settled on a patch of land north of Brazoria Tx, between West Columbia and Angleton now know as "Baileys Prairie" about 10 miles from my house. When Britt died he left instructions to be buried in the upright position, facing west, with his long gun and ammo, a lantern and a bottle of whiskey. When he died his wife followed his instructions BUT when it came to the whiskey, she said he had enought to drink in this lifetime he didnt need anymore to drink where he was going and did not put the bottle of whiskey in the grave. It is said on many a foggy nights an eerie light can be seen moving across the prairie. Its said that its "Old Britt" with his lantern looking for his jug of whiskey.
When the grandkids were little I use to tell them the story about old Britt and when they came to visit and stayed after dark, it was my duty to take them "Britt hunting". We would pile into the old van and head to Baileys Prairie. I cant count the number of times the kids spotted the old Britt looking for that jug of whiskey. ----Buzzard
