Your input or suggestion of a location that we could hold a Texas Tundras Meet. Close out of Houston vicinities could also be considered.
Looking for some place that all would enjoy, without the hassel of reserving any facilities. Preferability a park with some shade and picnic tables would be great.
Or possibly grab a hambuger, pizza or some chicken somewhere. Nothing fancy, family and friends participation welcomed, kicking tires and BSing....a relaxed day of fun!
Huntsville State Park is one option. $3.00 land use fee at the gate (I would have to verify if that is per person or vehicle). I go up there every weekend to ride my mountain bike. There is a lake and hike and bike trails and small campsites. I like it pretty well.
I bet there is something in Galveston area as well if Isadora doesn't blow it away at the end of the week.
What about around the San Jacinto monument?
Memorial Park has a picnic area that would be accessible on the weekend with many picnic tables as well. No land access fees and pretty central in Houston.
i love the beach! but, i understand many others don't. there is always a nice breeze. they won't let us drive on the beach in galveston though.
i think something more centralized would get more attendees. i like the memorial park idea. there are parks everywhere. is there something downtown? there is in the museum district around the zoo. we would fit in pretty well there! we could agree to meet on a day when there is a good event at the miller outdoor theater and enjoy sitting on our blankets that evening. here is the schedule: http://www.houstonparks.org/MillerOu...02schedule.htm
tap dancing, opera, ballet...hmm. ah, here we go. Oct. 4, 5 has Taiko Festival. if you don't know what that is, it is those wild Japanese drummers beating all those big drums with dancers all around. anyway it's something different.
but, in this area during the day we could visit, ride the train, go to the zoo, go to a museum, ride bikes, throw frisbees, footballs, baseballs. we could be free to explore around if we get antsy sitting around.
The area between the zoo and the museum is Hermann Park. Public area no fee for it. Depending on the time of day, we could get parking spaces close together by the museum rather than on the street. I do some work every year at the zoo putting in plants, painting fences etc. It is not a bad zoo really. Pretty enjoyable and doesn't take long to walk through. The kids love to roll down the hill at Herman park outside the theatre. I believe that the museum of fine art has a pretty good exhibit right now af Renoirs and others from that time period and style.
Suggestion for the beach, if you like the beach
Quintanta State Park --about 6 or 8 miles out of Freeport in the little town of Quintana ( about 20 houses) at the mouth of the old Brazos river. There are several pavalians (I think 4) avaliable for $40.00 a day that will accomadate up to 48 people. Paved parking area -off the beach. It is a raised deck like area with a board walk that goes to the beach. Restrooms, showers, horseshoes, vollyball areas. Some of the areas are covered some are screened in. You can choose to use the parking area and walk to the beach for $4.00 a car but you would not have reserved meeting area. If you reserve a pavalian the $4.00 is waived and the $40.00 would be the total. ALSO less than a !/2 mile from the park is "The Jettys". Its an elevated restaurant (rustic--very rustic) overlooking the mouth of the river and the beach . They (without a doubt, in my opinion) have the best hamburger in the state of Texas. They also serve steaks and seafood but I have never tried them. Freeport is about a 50 mile drive from Houston---Buzzard
