Unhappy my tires are shot

Well I went in to the dealership today to get an alignment done. BTW $39.95 at Alamo Toyota, cheapest in town I called them all including the Goodyear stores. Got quoted $49.95 over the phone yesterday but today $39.95 (HUM ). Anyway I have had a slight pull to the right for some time now and wanted to get it fixed. They did the alignment, not quit to DJs specs but close. When they were done SAME pull to the right. Took it back they swapped the front tires around. Left front to right front, right to left. NOW the pull is to the LEFT. Was told it could only be the tires.

I noticed the same pull to the right even after I got my tires balanced and rotated at a Goodyear store last weekend. That was what prompted me to think it was an alignment problem. Apparently I have multiple tires that are bad. They mentioned that they called it "radial force". Said it was probably caused by hitting something, a pot hole (large) or something along those lines. I asked about the "Extra Mile Package" and bumper to bumper warranty I got but seems like its a "you caused it" problem, BS. Oh well looks like its time for a new set of tires anyway. Not sure if I am gonna try anything bigger than 265/75/16 just yet. Not sure what will fit with "NO" rubbing under the lifted front end.

Anyway anybody out there with a pull that isn't fixed by an alignment, check out the tires might be it. Damn I don't want to spend $600 right now.

My truck has started pulling to the right also, I am about to get the alignment checked. Sure hope it isn't the tires, don't think I want to spend $600 just yet either.

How did Alamo treat you? Who was your Service Writer?

Question

Did you try swapping front to back? If the back ones are okay, keep driving it until the day come that you HAVE to get new rubber.

Dan

BTW...be careful of alignment shops, several of my daughter's friends have worked at them and had no idea what in the hell they were doing.

Dan

Yea I did switch the tires front to back last weekend when they balanced the tires. Same results. I must have multiple bad tires.

Tundra00

Service writer was Albert. Very nice guy and keep me informed of how far along they were in getting the job done. I did have to wait about 1.5 hours, but he told me that when I went in. They were short handed in the shop.

I am now thinking about taking my spare tire and having it mounted on one of my front wheels. At least that should eliminate the pull in the front. Also it will put off my purchasing a new set of tires until after Christmas.

Joe I found this thread that may be of some help. if not interesting reading anyways:

How many have had alignment issues?

Sure am in hopes that it may be just an alignment problem instead of tires. I know you are thinking about lifting your truck more and may want bigger tires.

Thumbs up

Thanks Dan. Glad to see that that thread was brought back to the top from 5 months ago. I think I will try to get my printout from the alignment posted for DJ to look at. The guy at the dealership did tell me "I don't know what the SAI is". In that thread DJ talks quit a bit about that, so it must be important.

I thought I just saw someone from Austin wanting to sell ther stock wheels for like $200. Might be cheaper than new for just like new? Check again the For Sale ads here on TS.

If the tires are still in good shape maybe you can have the tires swaped around. Turn the tire around on the rim. This might take some time but will cheaper than new tires. Should correct problem for tire pull. There is a tsb for tire pull problems. Dont
have the # handy.

Does anyone know if I have all 4 tires done (turned around) would this affect the other "good" tires? In other words would/could this cause maybe a seperation of the treads on the good tires? These tires already have 31,000 miles on them so they are not to far from needing to be replaced anyway. Was just not planning on it until spring time.

Well I have been tire shopping and I can tell you the price of tires is . Damn I didn't realize what a decent/good set of tires can cost. Decisions, decisions.

Cheapies (Wal-Mart Liberators) run about $500. Some Michelin LTXs about $800. Looks like Wal-Mart has the best price so far on the LTXs. Tried Sams, NTB, Discount, Sears. Don't know about you all, but thats ALOT of $$$$$$$$. Gonna check out Sams one more time tomorrow, think they carry a Mich tire made for them.

Have you tried shopping online?

BTW-Went to Alamo today and was told that my pull to the right could be caused by a bad caliper as well as the obvious. Needless to say they are ordering the parts to redo my brakes again, new calipers this time. You really should get this done before you are out of warranty. They won't fix my pop out windows eventhough I am barely out of warranty.

Yea I tried TireRack but by time you add shipping..........

I am working on my brakes, shouldn't be too much longer now. Sorry to hear about your window latch. Are they gonna replace all your brakes or only the caliper (1)?

No, they are doing everything, they just said that the caliper could be hanging and causing it to pull. Fixing the brakes just eliminates that possibility, if it still pulls after the new brakes then I'll check the alignment.

Well after doing alot of shopping around I went out today and bought the Michelin LTX A/T LT265/75/R16s.

They wanted $889 at Discount (talked him down to $725), $751 at Sams, etc.... Ended up buying them at Costco for $678 out the door including the road hazard warranty, taxes....

So far the steering wheel straightened up and the vibrations are gone.

WELL after riding around on the new tires for 2 days I went back today and had them order me the Michelin LTX "M/S" LT265/75/R16 tires instead of these A/Ts. The A/Ts would be great for you offroaders but I have barely been on a dirt road much less offroad. They just had a little bit of tire roar and I prefer a totally quite ride. Also the overall ratings on the M/S tire is better than the A/T.

BTW I almost tried the P275/70/16 but hadnt seen anybody post anything about that size tire. It is a little more than 1/2" taller and about a 1/2" wider than the 265/70/16 stock tires. I was concerned that maybe they would rub and didn't want to chance it.
