I just got some 18x9 Akuza Ichor wheels from tires.com. They recommended 285/60/17's. I put a set of Toyo ST tires on the wheels, but there was only about a quarter inch of clearance between the upper A arm and the sidewall. The tire installer and I were both concerned about the tire flexing and eventually rubbing a hole in the sidewall. So I had to go with 255/55/18's which are about 1/2 inch smaller diameter than the stock 245/70/16's and leave a larger gap in the weel well. I liked the way the 285's filled the gap. The 255's also don't protrude from the wheel as much as the 285's to protect the rim from curbs.
Anyone have problems with their sidewall rubbing? I'm thinking about sending those wheels back and getting some that are maybe 8 or 8.5 inches wide. Anyone have to do that? Any suggestions would be great.
Can you get a different backspaced wheel? I'm not sure how all that works but wouldn't that pull the tire toward the outside of the vehicle and away from the A-arm? I think the rims look good, but I don't think the tires fill up the wheel well enough. Unless of course you plan on lowering it... then it would look just fine. That is just my opinion.

That's the problem, finding an 18 inch wheel that I like that isn't backspaced too much. I agree with you that the tires don't fill tha space too much. I gotta send these wheels back anyway because the chrome is lifting. Maybe I can find one with about a 5 inch backspace.
Anyone ever experience rubbing of the sidewall on the a arm?

285/55/18 might work, but the selection is very limited. In a given rim width, say 9 inch, more backspacing would bring the tire closer to the frame. I thought about using some 1/4 inch spacers to give the needed clearance, but I may also go to a different rim alltogether, like the AR 640 (Hype). It's 8.5 wide and has only a 5 inch backspace which would give the necessary clearance. The Akuza's that I have are 5.4 backspace.
Gilley,
First off, let me apologize. I saw your original thread asking for advice when I was in a hurry and forgot to come back to it.
Anyone looking to plus size should read this THREAD. It's got some really good info that will help in your quest. Unfortunately, you've already had to learn some of it the hard way.
BTW, I do like that wheel. Good luck!

Thanks OKCTundra, I have been learing the hard way. I tried to get all of the info that I could before buying the wheels so I wouldn't have this problem, but sometimes you just have to fit things on and see what happens.
In order to put the 285/60/18 tires on the truck, I'm going to change wheels to the Akuza Zone. It's an 18x8.5 with a 0mm offset which should allow the tire to come out from the A arm just enough. Although there are other styles that I like better, this one is pretty good for the money and the fit. No more fender gap.
From the specs, can you think of any potential problems except maybe some rubbung of the mud flap at fill turn? I would appreciate any suggestions.

No Sean, I'd say that with 0 offset on an 8.5" rim you've got 4.25" backspacing which should be fine. As far as rubbing, your '03 is probably different from mine, but I get very slight rubbing on the frame as well. Your tire is slightly wider but the OD is slightly smaller. It's a tough call but it'll probably work fine. Good luck!

I have 285/75R16s and experience very little rub (only at full turn). I have very different wheels than yours as mine are American Racing AR23s, but it is a sharp looking set up for what I had in mind. I also have the TW Race Runner Sway Aways which gave my front a 1.5" lift or so.
Good luck and keep searching. This site is an awesome source of information!!
