This is a discussion thread titled "Larger Wheels FAQ", within the Tires and Wheels forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
since i do a lot of web searches on rims. i wanted to share a couple of sites that some of you might be interested in. i'm noticing more and more owners tossing 22's, 23's and even 24's on their sequoia, so if you wanna see how they look check out these sites.
Chris thanks for making this sticky. Can you make the title something like Ryan's Larger Tire FAQ without the Sequoia stipulation? My suggestion would be Larger Wheel FAQ. Then on your list and on all subsequent submissions we could specify Tundra or Sequoia ,what year and hopefully the wheel offset. I can tell you, however, that when I test fit my 20s on my wife's 2003 SQ, there was very little variance in how they fit.
No rub on bumper cover. Slight rub was at full turn on frame which should not be a prob with the 4mm offset diff. As far as percentage of change determining required changes... don't go by that. In general, the bigger the wheel, the more mass is located farther from the center. This decreases accelleration/braking performance. Whether you should address this issue is up to you.

OKC Tundra, I have just installed 275/55R20 Mich LTX MS on American Racing Wheels +19 offset on my wifes 2003 Sequoia. They almost rub on the knuckle under the top A-arm, about 1/8th of an inch clearance to the inside of the tire and a slight frame rub at full turn. Has anyone else got this condition and any problems? I need to resolve this asap if I am going to return the combo.

Check out the list below under 275/55/20. I had this combo with a +18 offset and experienced exactly what you're talking about on both my 2000 Tundra and a 2003 Sequoia. Very close on the upper A arm and slight frame rub at full lock. It wasn't enough to dissuade me and we're still running them on the 2003 Sequoia.

Thanks for the reply OCK. I also have a 2000 Tundra & a 03 Seq. Have you put many miles on them? Has the inside of the tire ever rubbed on the upper Knuckle below the A-arm? My wheels are offset +19, yours +18, whats the diff? Also the right side is closer than the left, must be alignment variance? I want to tow with this setup and want to ensure the safety of the setup. Thank you for your help! The tire shop is talking about a spacer, but will this shorten the wheel studs too much.

Like you, I'm not a big fan of spacers. The difference between our two wheels is 1mm. That's what the offset is typically measured in. Yours would be 1mm closer to the center of the truck. I don't think the 1 mm would be a deal killer, but on my 22s I made sure to go with a +10 offset since they are 9½" wide. Towing shouldn't be much of a concern since the tire profile probably causes the rub to be worse under compression. In normal circumstances, towing would cause a rearward shift in weight distribution, thereby extending rather than compressing. Of course, the opposite would occur during braking.

Has anyone tried 305/50/20 tires? Thats what I was reccomended by my local tire shop (TownFairTire) if I were to get a set of 20's.
The great thing about buying your tires from a local store is that if they don't fit you can swap them out for something that does work right away. My guess is that these will be borderline. My 275/55/20 were 31.9" OD and the 305/50/20 is 32" OD so that's very similar, but you're talking about an extra 30mm of width with the 305s. At full turn that width can get you into a few things that a narrower tire wouldn't. The 305s I'm running now have a 31.6" OD and I get some very slight rubbing. A lot of it will depend on the offset you're running. Maybe someone here has some personal experience with this, but otherwise make sure you let us know how it turns out.

Ahh heres the good news and the bad news about that.
The Good News: Yea that is the great thing about buying them from a local tire shop...
The Bad News: Regardless of the fact that they reccomended me that tire size, they said that once the tires are on, and if the they are too big and it rubs, then if I want to change them, I'm going to have to pay the price difference between the new tires....I'm like wth?? We'll see though, I will talk to them again since I didn't have much time last time, and if that doesn't work, I'll go to the same store in another town and try there.
