Tires and WheelsDiscussions and experienced advice about tires, wheels, traction control, proper balancing, improving tire life and more.
This is a discussion thread titled "Can I lower a 4X4?", within the Tires and Wheels forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I would like to lower my 2000 4X4. I rarely use 4 wheel drive except when I go to the snow. The only reason I got the TRD 4X4 is because I wanted the best on the lot and this was it. I just bought some 20's and I like the look of a lowered truck. Not slammed to the ground but just lowered so the wheels and tires can fill the wheel wells. Any input on advantages and/or disadvantages would be appreciated.
Hey what's up. I seen you drivin' the other day in Concord on Willow Pass Rd near Todos Santos Park. Your ride is still looking shweet!
Anyways, as far as your question, you might be able to lower it an inch or two but I wouldn't recommend it. If you do, you might have to have something custom made specifically made for 4x4 application without having problems.
Rob....you can drop the front by getting custom lowering springs made (PM Boone for more info) and drop the rear w/ lowering shackels from Bell-Tech. i believe the part number is 6700 or 6400 (i believe Dude Boy did this). also, both Boone and Dude Boy drive 4x4s. good luck!
Chris

Hey Dyogim, Yeah I work down the street from Todos Santos Park. Hows it going? Not trying to do a drastic drop, really want an inexpensive method that I can easily return to stock if the ride quality deteriorates. I don't want any serious rear wheel hop as I have heard may be what happens with lowering blocks. I am also thinking about just lowering the rear to level the stance. A local shop out here in Concord said a set of blocks could level me out. True?
Not sure how blocks help lowering the rear. Since, the leaf pack is sitting on top of the axle. You might be able to do a reverse shackle set-up but, that might drop it about 3-4 inches. I think your best bet is what Simias suggested, lowering shackles.
"You might be able to do a reverse shackle set-up but..."
Oops, I meant to say if you use a reverse u-bolt set-up to where the the leaf pack in mounted underneath the axle. Not sure, if there is anything available for our application though.
I have a 4x4 Sequoia with 20's and I lowered it 2.5" all the way around with springs (different suspension in the rear). 4x4 works fine and have no issues. The cambar/caster is off in the front so I'm waiting for Hotchkis to come out with their kit (sometime soon hopefully) to get it back to stock geometry. Check out my pics and let me know if you have any questions. Good Luck! Boone -
