Dang...didn't think I'd ever get registered to this forum...The reason I did was
because I related to your tire story. In 1989, I bought an Isuzu trooper RS
that came with BF Goodrich AT/TA's. I loved these tires and kept replacing
them with the same tire - probably 4 times over 165,000 miles. The last set
I bought from an on line tire company. The tires were totally different from
the previous tires. Being a short-wheel-based vehicle, this thing turned
quickly but these tires seemed to want to "roll over" past the foot tread
of the tire. It almost felt like the center of gravity had changed, but what
I suspected was that these tires were either seconds, or were built in
a third world factory. I can tell you that, driving these tires, you can feel this
"roll-over" to the extent that you have to start planning for it as you dive into the apex of a turn. It can feel like your ball joints are wearing out. I wish
you luck. Nothing short of tire replacement can fix it.

Do you have these on the limited 20" wheels? Are they LT tires? I have the LT285/55/20 on Moto Metal wheels, and Les Schwab filled them with 55 PSI. I lowered it to 50, and it feels a little better. They were a little stiff at first.....I wondered what the best operating air pressure was.......the stock tires on my limited wheels were 38 PSI.......

I read about the Road force balance and ended up at Les Swabs. It would be about $100.00 and they would only give me a 30 day balance guarantee. They put one on the machine and it was way off. At that point I thought I would talk to Costco. Of course Costco told me if I am unhappy with the tires they would pro rate them. So I ended up going with Toyo Open country MT. They balanced out great. Now I know they are not a high performance tire but I did not expect them to be so UNRESPONSIVE. It is like you turn the wheel and it takes a second for the tires to respond. Driving down the rode it feels like you are always having to correct for where the tires want to go and where you want to go. Then I was trying to get around a car that was stopped and was maybe traveling around 20 mph. I went to turn right then back left and I thought the truck was going to spin out on me. It was so bad I felt myself having to correct the steering wheel back. Now mind you in my BFG's I never had any issues with this which are the same size. The Toyo's are 33/12.5/20's. Again I know they are not a high performance tire but these tires seem to be unsafe at anything over 20mph. I am running them at 44psi and Les Swab put them down to 38psi but so far it does not seem to have helped. It also seem this would increase the sidewall flex. I was thinking of pumping them up to 50 or 55 psi but I do not know what this would do for tire life or traction. Anyone else running these with any complaints or solutions.

Thanks
John
i had the same exact problems with my toyos...they were the same exact size as yours..i purchased them at les schwab too..i got rid of them after about 1500 miles of use..they were terrible..pulled and moved all over the place during stops and freeway speeds....went back to my stock bridgestones which ride a hell of a lot better.

For the record I did not go into this blindly. I spoke with the salesperson on two differnt times and days about my concerns with the tire. I was told that they would be noiser and ride a little rougher but the responsivness was never brought up. I did some research on line comparing the BFG AT and Toyo MT and did not see anyone mention any handling problems. Almost all gave praise on high quiet and long lasting the tire was. I am not looking for sympathy but was asking if what I was experiencing was abonormal and if it was what other with this tire were doing that might make it more responsive ie. changing tire pressures. I KNOW this is a mud tire but people DO drive them on the street and highway. I just forsee having to make some evasive manuver and having the truck not go the direction I want it. If I have to eat these tires, so be it leason learned. For those of you that WERE helpful, thank you.
