Default Michelin XL 11.00R16 tires

Recently obtained a brand new set of Michelin XL 11.00R16 military spec tires. They are 11.00 in. wide, 38.7 in. tall and use a 16 in. wheel. They weigh about 100 lbs each, 4-ply steel on the tread and 1-ply steel on the sidewall.

I've had interest in these tires for a couple of years but, they were always hard to find. Although they are not ideal for rock crawlin', I think they'll do good in what I use my rig for. My rig is not a dedicated wheeler as I sometimes use it as a daily driver. I've heard these tires are pretty road friendly and quite. Compound is hard and the tread should actually last a very long time. The tag on the tire states they go for $403 a piece. I got it for a little more than that for all four.

I'll need new wheels 16x7 or 16x8 with about 2" or 4" BS. Trimming of the fender will definitely be required. However, I'm going to wait until my current tires go bald and then mount these. Here's some pics of the tires and a comparison to my spare 35"

Asking price was $500 but, I got them for $450. Traded some parts plus $100 and they were mine. Got them from a guy in Socal.

One of the labels on the tires showed a price tag of $403/each. Not sure where the prvious guy go them but, there's a couple of places online that have them. However, they are more on the E. Coast and they are not brand new. Each weigh about 100 lbs.

They look great! Since you will be driving this on the road a lot have you considered siping the tires? Considering those enormous lugs I would think it may help. But I'm not sure how much you drive in the rain so it may not matter. And I'm pretty sure you don't have to worry about snow like I do

Dyogim:

Yes - they are expensive tires - had to come by these Michelin - sidewalls are steel enforced - I prefer the Michelins over Goodyear Wrangler M T -

enjoy them - you got a great deal - i see them between 265.00 a tire and up
usually you dont see 16" available - more 16.5- or 17"

cheers

Rainy seasion in my area is usually for about 3 months but, yes I have thought about siping them. Les Schwab stated they would do it for $15/tire. I've also thought about grooving the lugs some.

You could just do it yourself. Go on ebay and buy a grooving gun for dirt track racing for ~$60. I siped just my inner lugs and I have been very pleased with it. The grooving blade can act as a siping tool when the blade is flipped upside down, making a upside down "v" shape, like this /\. And it is forms practically the ideal width of a 1/4" apart sipes.

I have had no major chucking issues so far, but the sips do provide more edges for a little worse wear and tear off-road. Where I wheel at Rausch Creek the rock surfaces are great for traction, but they just eat up your tires. But even given that the sipes are too deep to really have any chucking problems.

Plus this way when the tread does wear down you can just re-sip them yourself and not have to pay another 60 bucks. That was my idea anyway. And I didn't want sips on my outer lugs for more chance of chunking.

Edit: Here are some pictures to show how they got chewed up a little more than normal and how far apart I put them. There is still no major chucking even though that locker sometimes dragged a tire around a sharp corner while on a rock

I had planned on siping them myself. Les Schwab sipes straight across. Which, I'm not liking. I want to have the cuts follow the contour of each middle lugs. Do you have a pic of yours? How many blades did you have to use. I think the grooving gun might be my next tool . I just don't know how often I'll use it. I mean, I'll sipe/groove my tires. After that, that's it.

Thanks!

I added some pictures to my previous post showing the sipes. I just used one blade even though the gun came with 7 or 8 extra blades; all of which were the same size and width apart. I actually lost my gun for a while but just recently found it. Now it's in a safe place because I know I won't need it for at least 10-15K on these tires before I re-sipe them! And that might a year or two away. And by the look of your tires they may never wear out!!

I'm researching now on the different tire groovers. Hope to have these tires on by winter. I still need a set of 16x7 or 16x8 wheels.

Good luck on finding the wheels you need. I have been doing well with my wheelers wheels, but they are 16x8, and I actually wish they were 16x7 given how skinny my tires are. I haven't popped a bead yet, but I have rubbed the outer rim a lot and I never drop the pressure to below 18 which seems to work well for me. They conform well and no bead issues.......yet I assume a 7 inch wheel might be better for you for the sake of not loosing a bead unless you just get beadlocks. To bad jjc's bead locks are 17 inch

I wish I could afford beadlocks. The tires supposedly are suppose to fit a 6.5" wheel but can be used up to 8". I'm really want a 16x7 as well.

As for the grooving, reading on some peoples methods, I've read/seen online, people using a router and chain saw. LOL!!!

Yeah I've seem that! That just seems like it could be a costly mistake. But, do you really need full function of both your legs and all your fingers?
