Tires and WheelsDiscussions and experienced advice about tires, wheels, traction control, proper balancing, improving tire life and more.
This is a discussion thread titled "Before You Buy New Tires, Watch This!", within the Tires and Wheels forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
All a man really needs for happiness in this world is a good woman, a faithful dog, and a big-a$$ed set of tires on his truck.

Anyways, mine say 0807. Deciphered = 8th week of 2007 (Feb 20, 2007). That's great, because they were bought and mounted on April 28, 2007.
Thanks for the trivia question knowledge CB.

Yea, I will check mine. I never trust a news report and am not so sure thats such a big problem. Seems most of the tread I dodge is from 18 wheelers as it is much bigger than a car or truck tire. I think if anyone needs tires go buy them as they will be ging up some more now. Oh and check the date also. While I think the report may be a little slanted I don't want to buy new ties that are 6 years old.
Yeah...I wrote a long-ish post trashing that bit of sensationalized "journalism" a while back, computer probably ate it or somebody else deleted it out of a sense of civic responsibility .
It's not secret information, any of the tire companies will tell you how to read the code if you call, but so many people just treat their second most expensive purchase like a go-cart at the amusement park...they don't know, they don't care, they don't take care of it, and they blame everyone else when it breaks.
303 Aerospace Protectant is your friend...all over the tires, both sides, and on the tread.
I wouldn't buy a six year old tire. I'd buy a two or three year old tire, unless it had been sitting in the sun for three years.
If you're driving 10-15K miles per year, you'll hit the useful tread life in three or four years anyway. My AT/KOs have maybe 1/4" left, but they're useless in snow and mud, only good for dust and pavement, hardened, etc...time for a new set.
I'd drive a set of six or seven year old tires, as long as I'd been the one taking care of them for three or four of those years.
My spare is constantly covered in 303, and when we roll through the desert it's under a tarp. It's in great shape, about four years old, no microcracking or anything.
Don't believe everything you're told to fear by people who write at the junior high level...yes, media reports are written at the 8th grade level. Unless you're in 8th grade, think for yourself, learn to take care of your tires, and call the manufacturer if you need a reminder on how to read the manufacturing and date code. They'll talk you through on the phone.
Yeah i saw this same clip on tv when they first aired it. I ran right outside to check all of our tires. Oldest set we had was only 2 years old. I told a buddy i work with about it and he said his trailer tires were put on a year ago although they were made in 2002.

how did I know ABC News would use the line
"blah blah blah....could kill you!"
The opening report said he bought the tires 4 years old. Then at the time of the accident the tires were 9 years old, thats 5 years on a family mini-van. How is that a defective product? A terrible and sad loss, but not really a criminal act by the tire company.

Very informative. I did not know the tires have a date of manufacture on them. See, no matter how old I get there's always something new to learn. Of course, at my age you could tell me something I already knew & I'd think it was new. I believe all that tire tread on the highway is re-tread flying off tractor trailer tires. It's certainly too large to come off passenger tires.
So, when I go to buy new tires do you think I can demand they only put on newly manufactured tires?
But even avoiding the moral question of intentionally selling a product likely to kill someone, do you think tire manufactures & dealers would put themselves at risk of being sued out of business? I think the news people do a good job of bringing questionable issues to light but I usually find they leave out everything that doesn't support their side of the story. Then again, I will be checking those dates from now on!
good post. I've got tires inbound. i'll be looking at them when they arrive.

Geez! After all this I go & buy new tires and am so excited about finally getting my Destination At's after three years of the OEM's that I don't even look before having them mounted. According to the spare Dueler those OEM's were 2005's, same as the truck. I checked the new tires & they are marked 1408. Whew! Thanks, again, Cyberbilly.
