Angry 18k miles: Bald tires!?!

My co-worker noticed my tires are bald today. I never really checked / noticed my tires....i allways assumed that they are way to new to have any problems. what is going on here? I am still under 18k miles...truck is only 1year and 3 or 4 months old. if anyone else has this problem, or knows what could be going on...help me out here. here are some details that may help:

I live in so. california, farthest truck has been is mammoth, 3 times.

no, i dont drive like mario andretti!, sure i drive "fast" :P but who doesnt? i slow way down on turns.

tires are: dunlops

truck is 2001 sr5 extended cab. (if that matters)

any help and or info would be appreciated. I am just amazed at how fast they wore out. thanks.

I think first off the stock dunlops sucked anyway. Did you do normal tire rotations? Is the wear even? I had those dunlops and before finding this site was wearing the outside edge very fast. Numerous times to dealer and nothing could be found, alignment within factory specs was always the answer. Just before 18000 miles was in need of new tires. Thanks to alignment specs posted by a member DJ in here, the new tires are wearing just great. So ditch the dunlops, and if need be hunt down DJs alignment specs in here and all should be well.

Yes, the Dunlops are terrible. Mine were going bald around 17-18,000. Especially on the edges. Took it to the dealer, they aligned it and charged me a ton. They still wore fast. Now I have 25000 and the look like racing slicks. Almost no tread. I'm going for BF Goodrich 295/75/16s. I am about to have wheel problem solved so that the new ones won't rub the upper arm.

ive got 8000 and one is already bald. they do not grip the pavement for crap, and the other 3 are getting bad too. i am going to get new wheels soon and put the bald one on the spare and the other 4 will be the good ones. i hate these tires with a passion and make sure that all of my friends know that dunlop tires suck.

wes

p.s. one of my friends has a set of dunlops on his chevy and they are wearing horribly all over. he has the pressure correct and the alignment is near perfect. he will be upgrading to bfg's soon as will i

The Dunlaps do suck!
As a rule OEM tires on most vehicles are soft and wear out fast.
I only have 6K on my truck and have balanced & rotated the Dunlaps three times but the rear tires are still wearing heavy in the middle with 24LBS pressure in them. Now they are down to 20LBS.
I'll be glad when these stinking Passenger car tires are done and I'll put some good Light Truck tires on it and raise the air pressure back up to where it should be.
At least I did find the out of round tire this time and traded it for the spare.

I just looked at my tires the Dunlops and I mean really looked at them, I have 6700 miles right now, and I don't think that they have 10K miles left in them. There's just not much tread there. This is my 2nd new toyota, my 2001 camry had bridgestone RE92s that lasted 26K, before I had to replace them. They were good tires in the summer with no rain. If you pay as much as we do for these trucks (domestics included) you figure they would at least give us a mileage warranty on tires.

I think your 18k miles out of the stock Dunlops is typical. I only have 15k on my truck and I'll be lucky if I make it to 20k before they're all bald. Funny thing is I was shopping at the local Costco, they had a semi in front of the tire shop with a huge stack of old tires waiting to be loaded for recycling. I eyeballed those old tires and a lot of them had more tread left than the tires on my truck!

Ever played on of those video games where you choose all the great players for your team and you slaughter all the other teams something like 97 - 2? Well that's the team Colorado has put together for the upcoming season!!!

AVS all the way!!

ok now back to tire talk....

Drive like an "Old Fart" and you should be able to get 40K or a bit more out of them.
