Tires and WheelsDiscussions and experienced advice about tires, wheels, traction control, proper balancing, improving tire life and more.
This is a discussion thread titled "IS Rims", within the Tires and Wheels forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
My truck has been in some of Louisiana's nastiest Gumbo, as well as down at the Red River in the Sand and Clay mix. The rims have held up fine as well as the finish. These rims are fine for mud and offroading. I probably wouldn't buy them for rockcrawling or running 44" tires but 33" mudders aren't going to give these rims any problems.
i saw your pics......your a maniac. thats a 30k dollar truck...and u rock climb it??? im scared when im prerunning at 60mph on flat sand dirt and small rocks. i get bush scratches down the side and rock chips from the mudders kickin up rocks and your climbing rocks....septible to body damage and what not....your crazzzy but when im prerunning the rims hold up fine, sure some little surface scratches, but when they are cleaned they look bitchinnnn
Originally posted by DaveS I still might... Although I said I had put the issue to rest, it seems that I can't. For some reason, I'm finding it really hard to fight the desire to complete the IS look. I'm sure my wife thinks I'm completely nuts.
your heart says one thing but your mind says another ,yeah ive been there . there seems to be more cons than pro concerning these wheels . there was a thread a while back ,someone was selling scrap wheels and making a killing . i guess for a killer deal and knowing where the wheel came from could persuade my mind but from past experience i just went with a company that would stand behind what they sell, so american racing got my money
I love my IS wheels. I don't have any experience with other aftermarket wheels, but these are some of the most stylish around. They have held up to the mild Nor Cal climate (and even some harsh stuff iat the central coast) flawlessly.
Word of caution: Whatever wheels you get do not let anyone go near your wheel locks with an impact wrench. It will ruin them and potentially get them stuck on your truck like me.... Lesson learned the hard way...

Word of caution: Whatever wheels you have never let some fool go near them with an impact wrench (excpet for removal).
Use air ratchet to snug up lugs and then torque by hand using a torque wrench.

Really, DO NOT USE AN IMPACT WRENCH, EVEN FOR REMOVAL!!! The splined lugs are fine, but the locks are fragile and will strip easily. Tighten and remove by hand and keep firm pressure towards the wheel. One slip is all it takes to render them useless. Better luck to you!

Why Don't You Get The Cragar Boost Rims. They're Exactly Like The Is Rims And They Come In Chrome. I Loved The Look Of The Is But Wanted Chrome And Found These In A Magazine. It Was 1600.00 For 16x8's And 265/75 Bfg At Tires.

What kind of weights are you guys having them balance with, clip on the rim or stick on the inner rim? I like the stick on since the lip clip would scratch the rims. Opinions?

Personally, I prefer the weights on the inside. That is how I did my IS rims. I do not like the look of clip weights with wheels, especially, when you change tires and need to put the weights in a different location. The lip will probably show the damage in finish.

I have the IS wheels and I have the clear coat issue. It appears to be coming off in some areas. Now, what is the best procedure to remove the clearcoat and polish the wheels to a nice finish?
As for the balancing issue, I have no vibration issue but I will be needing an alignment soon.
Any competent polishing shop can clean them up for you. Then you have to decide whether to clear coat them again. Advantages to both. Some of the guys have taken the opportunity to paint the spokes/hub for a custom one-off look. Good luck with that. I was keeping my rims clean until the cat pissed on one and caused the clear coat to discolor.

Does anyone know where I can get center caps for the IS wheels, I bought a set of the wheels and need two screw in caps and I pop in. Went to my Toyo dealer and the "kid" at the parts counter had no idea... Help! I am ready to put them on!
