Default IS Rims

I'm still trying to decide whether or not I want to complete my Ivan Stewart look with the IS rims. Several months ago, many were having problems with the clear coat flaking off. Does anyone know if TRD has done anything about this from a manufacturing standpoint or is it still Russia Roulette in a sense when you buy the wheels? What's the current consesus regarding purchase? Should I go for it or pass?

Also, I had heard that the IS rims can be a mother to balance, that they require a lug-centric adaptor when balancing, and that there was is a TSB which advises how to properly balance them. Can anyone direct me to a copy of the TSB? I checked for TSBs on my vehicle and I didn't see it.

Thanks,

Dave

I just went the used route and repolished the lip...getting rid of the clearcoat altogether. Balancing for my set was a breeze.

I found a guy who was parting out his extras before a trade-in. Said he didn't even consider pulling hte IS rims for sale cause they would balance.

Sounds like a roll of the dice as to whetehr they will balance or not.

I did a little more searching and found the TSB (WH001-00) for the IS rims...it only shows up if you have your vehicle set to 2000 Toyota Tundra...

Can anyone tell me if this TSB applies to the IS rims with the snap-on center caps or if if just applies to the older IS rims with the screw-on center caps?

For anyone out there with IS rims...have you experienced any balancing issues? Did you have your rims balanced according to the TSB?

Yes I balanced mine per that TSB. They stay balanced for about a month, then they shake again.

Oh well, something I have to live with.

Wouldn't trade them for nothing though. They get more compliments than any other wheel I have ever had.

Thanks for all of the replies... Although I love the look of the wheel, I'm not ready for the potential hassle of getting them balanced every month. I've been considering getting the wheels since buying my IS kit last December, but with both the balancing and the clear coat issues to possibly worry about, I think I can finally put this issue to rest...

I still might... Although I said I had put the issue to rest, it seems that I can't. For some reason, I'm finding it really hard to fight the desire to complete the IS look. I'm sure my wife thinks I'm completely nuts.

I had the same concerns with the IS rims worried about balancing issues, etc. I believe most of the problems were with balancing the first issue with the screw on type center cap. I have the snap on center cap and have not had any issues with them. I did have them road force balanced. IMO, I love the look on the truck with the IS kit. Not sure how these rims hold up in snow belt areas, because my truck is in storage and has not seen the nasty NE winter weather.

I've had my IS wheels for almost a year and no problems. At least not yet. I did keep my OEM wheels and use them for winter driving when I go out of state or up north on hunting/fishing excursions. That keeps snow chains and de=icing salts off of them. I have not had any of the balancing problems on these rims.

nice looking, yes, they won't last 10 minutes if you actually plan on using those mudders.
That's not really a concern for me...I have a 2WD which I use as a commuter. My idea of off-road is if I accidently slip off the side of the driveway when I'm backing out...

um.....i use those mudders and yea they last fine. actually bill west has is rims mounted on his truck, and he has full suspension done by him. He uses his truck as a chase truck behind his trophy truck...so actually the rims do hold up well....sure your going to get a couple of scratches, but all rims will.
