Default Centerline wheels on 2001 Tundra

I'm shopping around for new wheels for my 2001 TRD Tundra. I'm currently running 265-70R-16's on the stock 16x7 rims.
The stock alloys are (I believe) have 4.5" backspacing, 6 bolt on 5.5" bolt circle. I believe the Tundra centerbore is 108.1mm/4.2559"

I want pretty much the same diameter of tire as stock
I want 16" rims, as larger rubber is stupidly expensive!
I don't want to lift or drop the truck
I don't want rubbing

So, my options are few and far in-between.

The best I have come up with so far is the Billet series from the fine people at Centerline wheels. I like the Sundance Matrix II, but the centerbore is wrong by just a bit (I think)

Here's a link:
http://www.centerlinewheels.com/sub_wheel.php?mw_id=1

I'm considering the Mohave model, 16x8 with 4.5" backspacing. The 16x7 version has 1/2" too much backspacing. So, the 16x8 will have the same backspacing, yet the tire will be "out" of the wheel well about 1/2".

So, any comments on what I've picked? Any other thoughts in regards to the measurements? Anybody out there have Centerline wheels of any kind?

I really like the look of the Centerline wheels and they were on my short list, but because I wanted to push the wheels and tires out a bit more I went with 16x8 Welds with the 3-5/8" backspacing.

Anyway, another tire size to consider is the 265/75R16, it is a bit taller but not enough to really affect anything. the 265/75s are an LT rated tire so they do have a stiffer sidewall.

I have to run a lift (2" with coilovers) up front with my wheels, but even then the only rubbing I got before lifting it was some rubbing on the lower bumper valence (black trim) at a full turn.

After reading what you wrote and looked at the specs, I think there may be a misunderstanding of the total affect of a wider wheel.

A 16x7 wheel with a 4.5" BS matches the factory wheel and you don't change anything. A 16x8 wheel with a 4.5" BS will move the outer edge of the wheel and tire out 1". Since the distance from the hub to the back of the wheel is the same (4.5"), the extra inch of width will be on the front side of the wheel. As you mentioned, the 16x7 wheel with the 5" backspacing could end up causing the tires to rub on either the frame or upper suspension components.

Finally, just in case you're uncertain about moving the wheel and tire out a full inch, the Ivan Stewart wheels are 16x8 with ~4.5" of BS and they fit fine on the stock trucks.

Hope this helps.

Yeah, I looked at the Welds as well. Quite nice. Which ones are you running?

In regards to 16x7 vs 16x8: Yeah, you're right. It'll be 1" out, not 1/2". I forgot backspacing was measured from the edge of the rim. I was thinking 1" wider, split in half.

So you're saying the 265/75R16's will fit "cleanly" without any lift? I can (maybe) tolerate a small bit of rub at full lock.

Any ideas on the centerbore measurement? If you look at the Centerline site, some of the "nicer" wheels have a centerbore VERY close to the Tundra. I wonder if they are really measured that accurately?

I did a lot of research and had to learn a lot myself before getting my wheels, but it was worth the time and effort.

I ended up getting the Weld Sidewinders. I had it narrowed down to the Thrusters, Sidewinders and a couple of others, and the backspacing was the main reason I went with the Welds.

By the way, have you looked at the American Eagle wheels (www.aewheels.com)? They have new designs (e.g., Series 102 and 194) that are exact (Or at least very close anyway) copies of the Welds at a much better price and they come in a 4.5" backspacing.

Unless I've missed something here on TS, you should have a clean fit with the 16x8s with a 4.5" backspacing if you run 265/75 or even the 275/70 sized tires. All of the members with the IS wheels, which are 16x8 with 4.5" backspacing, have had no reported problems with any kind of rubbing. And since Toyota sold the wheels (although with 265/70 rubber) as part of the IS package, I'm sure they verified the fit before putting them on the market. And the 265/75s are only about a 1/2" taller than the 265/70s so there is minimal difference between the two tire sizes.

As far as the center bore size question, I honestly don't know. Personally, I would contact a good wheel shop that sells Centerline or contact the guys at Centerline directly and ask if they'll fit. I've usually found that once a company learns that you're interested in buying their products, they're pretty good about helping out and getting you the answers you need.

Hope this helps and good luck.

Thumbs up Centerlines looking good...!!

Hey Toolbox,

I'm also looking at Centerline's Billet series rims. I called Centerline inquiring about the HT Comp series but they told me that the only series that would fit our trucks would be the Billets. I'm looking at the Star or Sahara rims in a 17x8 rim on 285/55/17 or 285/60/17 Kumho or Michelin tire. I hear ya on the lack of choices for our trucks. JB

I called Centerline as well, and found them very helpful. Any idea on the best place to order from? I have a local dealer (up here in Canada), but I always like to check to see if his prices are fair.

You figure the 285's will fit? Are you adding any extra mods to allow this width?

Tires: I'm not much of a fan of Kumhos, and I've never owned Michelins. For me, the best tires going are from Toyo.

The Kumhos are rated better than the Michelins and are getting great reviews. The 285/60/17's are the same height and a little wider than stk. The Centerlines are 4.5" b/s so I believe that they'd fit w/o any trbl.

I have a local tire rack approved dealer that is quoting the rims @ around $250.00-$350.00 depending on the style of rim and finish and $125.00 a tire w/chrome valve stems, bal. & mounted. .Sahara style

Check out the tire rack dealer near you. You can find them @ the bottom of the Forums page under products for your truck.Sahara style

My local dealer quoted me CDN$660 a wheel (for the Mohave 16x8). That's about US$475.00 It sounds like your prices are waaaaay better than mine. The tires I want will be about US$150 each, including balance and install. Regular stem.

Hmmm...I have to keep shopping around. I'll check out the tire rack thing. Thanks!
