or if youre planning on going offroad a lot (i mean *a lot*, and not just fire roads either, i mean joe-style creepy crawling), and expect to run 35" tires in the future...then, it's in your best interest to regear to 4.56 even while you still have 33s. it's more the crawl ratio that requires a regear in that case, not really the power loss--i already notice it just with 33s. if you were just thinking about the acceleration, then what y2k said definately applies. that guy on 42" tires didn't regear beyond 4.79 (?forgot the next step up from 4.56) i think.
Thanks a ton guys. I never go offroading in y'alls sense of the word (crawling). We don't have many rocks around here to play on . Offroading for me is flying through mud and climbing up big, twisty, muddy things.

Same way down here. A "big rock" will still fit in your hand. Now "big mud holes"... well we have a few of those.
I have been thinking about some 33 inch tires. I don't mind a little loss of power. Those of you running 33's with stock gearing, how is it affecting your gas mileage (allowing for the speedometer correction)? I just don't really want any "worse" gas mileage.

Well, it has been over a month since I made the above post and no replies. I sure would like to know how the 33's are affecting gas mileage. My truck is stock right now. I have S&SAutochrome headers and Y-pipe and a SpinTech muffler ready to install but have not had the time.
Thanks...
Mike

i haven't had a problem with mileage on my 33s, extremely little difference from the mileage on a 265/75/16 XT and a 285/75/16 XT. definately a difference between these tires and my old stock road tires (nearly smooth), but that's just the difference between an XT and an AT.
My gas mileage with 33's dropped from 15 to 13 overall. On the highway going slow (65ish) I actually got better mileage with the 33's. Highway acceleration (75+) was really hurt with the 33's - around town I didn't notice much difference.

Does anyone know what the stock gear ratio is in the tundra? I am thinking it is 3.91. If this is correct we are actually on the low side for even highway driving.

Here's a list of gear ratios for tire size for you guys to review.

Yes, it's 3.91.

Thanks a ton for that. That really helps. I'm starting to think I may go 4.56 or 4.88 gears....

4:56's are real nice with 33's both for performance and mileage. 4:88's will definitely give you a lot of snap on the street but it'll knock hell out of your highway mileage, as you'll be turning in the vicinity of 3K+ for RPMs. If you think you'll be moving up to 35's then 4:70 or 4:88s will work great with that tire.

Whats the cheapest place to find 4.56 gears? I only need front, right?

If you have a 4WD, you need two sets. If you have over 30,000 miles on your truck, you need new bearings too. Changing the gear ratio on a 4WD is flirting with a grand no matter where you go.
