There's a Tundra (4x2) at the local dealer with the 18" BBS wheels on it. These are the same wheels I've seen on Tacomas and Sequoias. They look pretty darned good to me. I was content to just replace my Limited alloys with another 16, but now I'm having 2nd thoughts. I didn't want to buy tires, as my Michelins are fairly new. I've heard some people say not to put larger wheels on a 4x4. Is this a durability issue, safety, performance, what? My truck sees limited of road use....no rock crawling or mud slinging. I generally use 4wd to get out of sticky or slippery situations. Any ideas?
it's a trash-the-rims issue, actually, if you go offroad a lot.
in your case, it sounds like you'll be fine with 18s. you'd be pushing your luck if you were going offroading with a 31" tire on 18" rims since you'd only have about 5.5" of space between rocks and your rims, however (and i dunno if your truck can currently do this) you can get 33" tires for an 18" rim to the same effect as a 31" tire on a 16" rim. upside is, it also looks really nice. you may find tho that you have more choices on a 17" rim, if youre looking for a burly tire for looks or use or whatever. since you're not offroad too much, you'd be fine.
look at tundra4towin's pics, he has 18s on a 4x4 with 265s. it looks ok, i personally am not big on the big rim thing for 4x4s, but if thats what you want i say go for it
I personally like the way they look. I also don't do much hardcore wheeling. If I were getting rims I would go 18". Unixadmin (or something very close to that) has some good looking 18" rims on his 4x4. Check his pics to see.
Here's the truck that I saw at the dealer that I really liked the looks of. I was content to just get 16s until I saw this. But in reality, price may be a big factor. I'm not willing ot spend $2500 for tires/wheels.
I'm changing my position on 18"s. I previously didn't like 18"s on 4x4's but yesterday I saw a Silverado that looked really good with them. But, they were 5 spoke. I think 18"s look good if they're a small number of spokes (5 or 6). Expensive but insanely awesome rims are Anteras. Here are a shot of my 2 favorite Antera rims:

I can vouch for the rim damage thing! I have 18's and a total of 32.5 inch tire diameter and one of the rims has a very big gouge from a rouge rock from a 4 wheelin' trip...
But i think the larger rim size fits the Tundra very well, so i was willing to take the risk.
