I have an '03 SR5 4x4 with TRD. For some reason I thought it came with an alloy wheel on the spare. When I was under the rear today changing the differential gear oil I was inspecting everything and noticed the spare has a steel wheel.
What gives? Is this correct?

That is the way my 2001 4X4 Limited came. I think they are all that way.

They all come with a steel spare. What do you you want for $30,000?? tires and rims TOO!! lol. There are many selling the stock alloy rims on the TS board when they switch to different set-ups.. Most are reasonably priced. I even sold my steel rim to a guy who used them for just offroading..

LOL!
I plan to start looking for my 5th wheel to get everything to match. I need an IS wheel, so going to shop around. Somehow, putting on the steel wheel is not going to cut it, even for emergencies, so I might as well start 5 wheel rotation while everything is still basically new, especially while the Toy is in storage.

I thought I read a post a here a few months ago about the spare having an alloy wheel. Also with the owners manual showing 2 rotation schemes, 4 wheel and 5 wheel, I figured the spare was on an alloy wheel.
It is not a big deal to me. The spare will be like my old Chevy and sit there. In 10 years and 180k miles I think the spare on my Chevy spent maybe 50 miles actually being used.
Also look at it from this perspective. I am a slime ball dealer. I grab 4 spares from 4 trucks. I put them on a truck with steel wheels and use the wheels/tires from that truck to replace the 4 spares that had alloy wheels. It takes someone 30 minutes to do it and I add several hundred, maybe a thousand, dollars onto that truck for the alloy wheels and claim they were a "dealer installed" option.
I just wanted to make sure that if I paid for an alloy spare I was getting it.

If I am not mistaken unless the dealer orders the spare with the same rims that are on the truck (in the order specs) it will come with the steel wheel. Over the years I have heard of dealers (mostly Chevy) ordering the spare to match the other rims, but they had to spec it in the order to the factory.
I agree with you that to do the the 5 tire rotation I would want one also. I just never have rotated with 5 tires. I don't think the dealer "beat" you out of anything, I think that is just the way they come...unless it is put in the original order specs.

Tundra's come with the cheapo STEEL spare, and Sequoia's come with all five wheels the same (ie alloy). I did notice that is was only true of the Limited's on the lot. The SR5 Sequoia's had alloy rims (4) but steel spares. What gives??

My '03 SR5 has the alloy wheels and has the alloy spare, but then again they are the 17" and I do not think Toyota offers a 17" steel wheel.
I think the issue is more a matter of the distributor. Many Tundras and Sequoias in this area have the alloy's added by Gulf States. In those instances, I suspect you only get 4 instead of five.
There is a local trailer company here that buys the old steel wheels from Gulf States for use on their trailers.....many with the original Stones and/or Dunflops.
