Default largest Rim & Tire combo possible on Stock '02 Tundra SR5

Well, I'm past 30k and in need of new tires. Of course I'd like to customize a little and get a nice new set of larger rims and tires. Much like I did with my old 1991 Toyota PU where I put a set of American Racing 15x8's with a nice fat and large 31x10.5r15's.

What I'm looking for is a good looking truck tire, not some racing rim with an inch of rubber around it. We're talking a good size rim 16 or 17" with a large amount of rubber. I have the stock fender flares, but would like to keep most of the tire tucked into the truck rather than out past the fender flares if you know what I mean.

Any suggestions on a good rim & tire combo? Again, I want to stay with the stock suspension and body height and get the largest combo possible. Oh, also my truck is an SR5 4wd Access Cab.

Thanks,
-Kirk

Default Wheels 'n Tires...

I am shopping for tires and wheels also. I went to Les Schwab and asked the same question. I was told that the stock size of 16x8 is the max size. I find that a little hard to believe. I would like to go up to 18's or so, but the money really jumps when going oversize.
What wheels are you looking for? I like the Ultra Type 164 and the more expensive Weld Scorpion. Going shopping more this weekend.

With a stock suspension setup you can go with a 16x8" wheel (stock wheels are 16x7") and 265/70 or 75 tire. I imagine you could go with a 16.5" or 17" wheel and a corresponding 31" tire as well, but anything taller or wider will give you major rubbage

Lotza options out there: some of the wheel manufacturers have websites that you can "see" what your truck will look like with a given wheel set

Enjoy!

I got 265/65/r17 factory on my 03. I belive they are almost a 31 inch tire. But i would stay away from 17 in wheels there is not a lot of tire selection of this size, expecially in any type of off road tire I would stay with a 15 inch rim and stuff the biggest rubber i could in the fender well. Thats my plan.

I'm in the same situation as balou62... I have a '04 Access cab with 17's. I wanted the biggest possible rims Toyota had to offer, but didn't realize the tire sizes/choices for 17's are extremely limited. I wish I had ordered my Tundra with 16's... I too am very interested in something bigger/wider than my stock P265/65/17's.

Justa FYI- 16" is the smallest wheel size you can run, and I think, 17" if you have the TRD big brake upgrade. Not sure on the later

Default Bigger Tires/Wheels

************

So I get from these comments that my thinking about 20" wheels for my bone stock 03 SR5 Access Cab 2WD would not work?
The ones I've on this forum are lifted?
Thanks for any replies.

Default Wheels

I've seen many tundras with 20'' wheels. dont look good in my opinion. What i plan to do is get an 18"x8" wheel and mount some BFG All-Terrains in 285/60 tires on em. I think that would look good. 20" wheels are do-able though. just look through some forums, and some members photos.

This is what I've been planning as well. Nitto makes a 285/60/18 on their Terra Grapplers.

Do you think there will be any rubbing issues with this combo?

Chris.

I dont know what the Inches equivalant is to that, but somone told me it would work. You probably would need to trim your fender flares. I dont see why though when i think about it, because they say you can put 285/75-16 on without a problem. so 285 would be the same width, and 60 is 15mm shorter on sidewall than 75, so that should make up for the extra 2 inches of rim size and all boil down to the same basic size. It would probably matter too on the backspacing and stuff. You know, i dont know if they make them any more, but those Niche (how do you say that by the way, Nitch? Nickey? Nitchey? Nish? Nishey? its wack yo,) Niche Throttle rims that TRD used for the I.S. Package, i think you could get them in 18", and i think that is the best looking wheel that gos with the tundras. I've also thought about getting some Moda R7 wheels or R8s. They have a similar look. But nitto Terra grappeler look cool too. Also looks cool are the Pro-Comp X-Terrains.

I ordered the 18" Cragar Boost rim. It looks very similar to the Niche Throttles.

I hope that I don't need to trim my fenders.

I just looked up a picture of those Cragars. Man thats going to looks SWEET! I saw chrome ones, i dont know if they make them in silver...but you got Chrome right? Be sure to take pictures when they're mounted. I'm excited to see them! Dunno about the price though...that would flatten my wallet. Then you gotta buy rubber too! dang. Good choice though on the looks.

I got them in chrome. But I'm sure you can get them in other finishes because the wheel has to go through a "chroming" process. That's one of the reasons I have to wait for them. The price isn't too bad. I'm getting them for $225 a peice.

Stock 2001 Tundra (no TRD lift) with lots of suspension wear and sag - 285/75/16's too big - rubbing that will destroy the tires in short order. 265/75/16's easily fit. Suspect 270/70/16's would also fit - others have said so.
