Default Costco tire department BS

Last week one of my tires (BFG Rugged Trail OEM crap) separated at the 29,000 miles. Not surprising considering everyone's experience with that tire. So I go to Costco in Salem, OR with the intention of buying the BFG AT KOs. Unfortunately, the store didn't have them in 265/70/16s but they did have them in 265/75/16. Put em on I say. No, says the tire guy, that size "isn't a recommended size for the Tundra." Well, then what other truck tires do you have in 265/70 size? The goofus points to a stack of BFG Rugged Trails and some other 4 ply non-load rated passenger tires. When I tell him I want real truck tires and not a set of crappy Rugged Trails or other inadequate passenger tires, he begrudgingly relinquishes on the 265/75 BFG KOs.

Like an idiot I hold off on installation until the next day because of a time crunch. When I call the next day to make sure the tires are still in stock, the dork tells me his supervisor won't let him put them on because they "once put them on a Tundra and they rubbed" and because the tire "isn't recommended." The Albany Costco tire department was even more adamant in refusing to install the tire, saying they would be unsafe on my truck. Well, holy crap.

Since I needed tires in a hurry I ended up going to Les Schwab where I bought a set of 265/75 Open Country load rated truck tires. In fact, I went to three different Schwab dealerships and every single one said 265/75s would be fine...no rubbing, no safety problem. And true to their word, the things don't rub a bit.

Has anyone else had a problem with Costco? My guess is that they're overstocked with BFG Rugged Trails and they need to move them. I also think Costco is staffed by morons.

Erik

I think it's a liability thing that they won't go outside the manufacturer's specifications. CYA.

How do you like the toyo's? I'm seriously considering them. My P-rated Revo's wore out in 20k miles and I need to replace them really soon.

All I can do is speak from experience, and the one time I bought tires from Costco, I did not have a problem.

I previously had a Mazda B2600i that came with 215/70-15s on 15x7 rims. I had Costo install a set of 31x10.50's on 15x8 aftermarket rims and did not get any grief at all.

Default Costco Tire Police....Keeping our roads safe!

Yes, this is SOP (Standard Operating Procedure) for Costo. They will not install larger than stock tires for liability reasons.

Now, for price savings, you could purchase the tires (most of the time you need to order them online anyway), pick them up and then have then installed somewhere else. However, their total price includes mouting and balancing, so going somewhere else would probably negate the price savings.

I'm surprised that 265/75's fell into this category since they're only slighlt talelr. (I was considering installing this size on my truck and going through Costco!) Since Big O Tire has BFG AT KO's for the same price (fall sale), and I'm sure less hassles, I plan to go through them. I even bet Big O would be willing to test install a 285/75 just so I can see where it will rub. I have a 2" Cornfed front lift, and while the wider size will fit on the stock TRD 5-spoke rims, I have read other posts where they will rub on the upper control arms. Bummer, as I really wanted wider tires...

Seee-ya,

Jim.

O.K.... now you've don't it, Erik... you've confused me!

I was under the impression that there was only "ONE" BFG R/T, which TS members were complaining about... as a "stock" OEM tire?! After reading your post... I'm thinking that there are now... 2 BFG R/T's!? One is a "Rugged Terrain" (like what came on my TRD DC), and the other is a... "Rugged Trail" (like what you have)!

Ummm... O.K. That said... WHAT'S THE FLIPPIN' DIFFERENCE??!!! About the only difference "I" can see is... one has "outlined" white letters... while the other has "solid" white letters! Other than that... if memory serves me correctly... the "Rugged Terrains" actually "look" much more like a "street" tire, while the "Rugged Trails" look "similar" to the BFG A/T(All Terrains).

I guess the "BEEG" question then... is... are BOTH of these BFG R/T tires...simply put... "JUNK"?!

I sure hope "someone" has an answer! I've been trying for more than 2 months now, to find a tire shop "willing" to offer me a swap on these R/T's, for a set of A/T's! So far... the "few" tire dealers who've offered... don't want to give me a "fair-shake" on trade-in pricing for the R/T's! Especially... when you consider my R/T's have "LESS THAN" 750 miles on them! The best I've been offered thus far... is a measly $75 per tire... meaning that I would "STILL" have to "antee-up" with better than $400 friggin' dollars!!! "NOT GONNA' HAPPEN!!!" Obviously... until I find a tire dealer "willing" to do me fairly about this... I guess I'll be ridin' on "MY" type of R/T's until they come appart like yours did!

Dave

Default Ain't no Rugged Terrain that I can find...

Per the BFG site, there is only Rugged Trail:

http://www.bfgoodrichtires.com/bfgap...og/index_6.jsp

There's a Radial Long Trail, but no "Rugged Terrain". (Nor do I see it under Family SUV, Sport Truck or Off Road). Click on "Find a BFGoodrich Tire" for a pop-up list of all their tires. Do you have a pic of your Rugged Terrains? Perhaps they're a new OEM tire?

EDIT: I checked your pics and can't make out the lettering on the tires even when enlarging the picture...

Seee-ya,

Jim.

For the very brief time I've had them, they seem fine. At first I thought they were a little thumpy but I went back to Schwab and they rebalanced them, and now they're fine. Actually, for a 6 ply tire they're quite smooth on the road, with only a hint more side to side play because the sidewall height difference from stock. But then, I'm only running 35 lbs of pressure in them--more air would tighten that up. While I live in CA, these tires are really popular in the Pacific NW where Les Schwab dealers are clustered.

Nope. I had the OEM BFG Rugged Trails tires. I still have a virtually new one as the spare but I need to swap that because my new tires are bigger. Costco sells the same POS for $125 or so. At one point BFG must have switched between raised white outlined letters and solid white letters but the name and tread pattern remain the same. For what its worth, one of my front tires separated where the sidewall met the tread causing a an egg sized lump. Not good especially when you think about what a Tundra would look like as it imitates a Ford Explorer tumbling end over end down the freeway.

For a truck the size of the Tundra I just felt it needed a load rated tire, which is why I resisted buying a four ply passenger tire and particularly the Rugged Trail. Heck, the Rugged Trails only air up to 35 lbs, which is simply too low for even moderate loads.

But as for Costco acting so schizoid, I wouldn't have been so peeved if it weren't for the fact that they had absolutely no 265/70 load rated truck tires in stock (and only two 265/75s--the BFG KOs and a 10 ply Michelin).

Sam's did the same to me. I was going with the BFG AT KO'S at 265/75/16. They will sell me the tires at 500.00 for 4 and then I will take them to my other tire dealer and have them installed.

its just a really popular size, and they porbably sell out of what they have rather quickley. but yea some costcos are better than others. i probably wont ever get tires there for my truck.
