I've got a '95 Tacoma extended cab V6 4x4, that came "stock" with a set of 31x10.50's. I'm still running the same size tire on stock rims, but replaced the stock rubber with a set BFG A/T ko's, about 3 years ago now. Here's the reason for the question...
I just came back from a coastal fishing tip, this past weekend, where all of us in our group, had to "air-down" our tires to 20lbs. That's obviously... no big issue as... there are several places to "air-up", once you leave the beach. Anyway... my question is...when I "aired-down", I never even thought about looking at the pressure in my tires first! So... when our fishing trip was over... I went to one of the many places, close by, to "air-up". Having been on the beach, since before daylight and having to travel at least 3-5 miles to get air, it kinda stands to reason... that my tires were warm, by the time I got to an air pump.
So, that said... anyone have a "clue" what the pressure "should be" when the tires are warm. I went with 40lbs, which I think was a bit too much, even though the printed info on the BFG's side-wall said a max. of 50psi. This morning, I checked my tires... cold... and the pressure was 35lbs in all four. The "recommended" tire pressure (on the sticker inside the driver's side door-jam)... says... the "cold tire pressure" should be... (26/front and 29/rear)! Is that RIGHT?! That SURE does seem awfully low... IMPO! So... I went with 30lbs in all four, basing that... on a recent thread hear at TS in the Tundra forum, where a similar tire pressure setting also exist for the Tundra (i.e. 32/front and 33/rear). Most members were going with 35lbs. in all 4.
Any ideas, thoughts and/or suggestion, about the Tacoma's tire pressure settings, will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Dave

the psi on the door jam is for the eo tires, not after market. everyone i have ever talked to or tire ship i have gone to puts 35psi cold in all 4. i personally run the rear a little lower, so like 33f/30r.

Hey yosh2000,
Don't disagree with you.. but... my "aftermarket" tires are "EXACTLY" the same... "size"... as my original OE tires were?
Unless I'm wrong... it seems... the same info (in the door jam) would apply for aftermarket tires as well... "IF"... there has not been a tire "size" change... right?!
Dave

Although the BFG tires are the same size the tire construction may be different. If they are wearing evenly and you are comfortable with the ride and traction I'd think something in the low thirties would be OK. Then just watch the wear pattern on the tires to adjust up or down on the pressure. The general statement on the door applies to the OEM tires construction as it was delivered.

If a combo of all these whizz bangs met their claims you'd have to siphon gas out of your tank every second day and sell the excess horsepower on the third????
If your engine doesn't consume ANY oil it will seize???
Some people should not be allowed access to tools without books!!!
I tend to run less pressure than identified on the door. I find the ride is smoother with 26 front and 29 rear on the 4runner and Tacoma we have. The Tundra is running 28 front and 33-37 rear depending on if the trailers on or not.
I just got off the phone with someone at BFG and explained my little "predicament" to her. And... of course... she recommended the tire pressures listed in the door jam of the truck! Funny thing is though... she had... "DIFFERENT"... pressure info... than what was listed in "my" door jam! The pressure settings she gave me were... 29/front & 32/rear and... my door jam says: 26/front & 29/rear! When I told her that "my" door jam info was different... the only thing she could say was... "we may not have the proper inflation info for your truck." Oh brother... PLEASE!
Anyway, I bought these tires from a Wally World (A.K.A. Wal Mart) just about 3 years ago, now. I also bought a "lifetime" rotation-n-balancing for these tires at purchase. Only problem is... at nearly EVERY 5000 mile service... they could NEVER seem to get the ride quite right! Then, just about 3 week ago... I'd had enough of Wal Mart's "unsuccessful" trying ... and decided to give a ture... "TIRE shop"... a shot at it. It turned out to be the "RIGHT" move. This place... gave my turck the best "ride" its had in over a year! Then... I go and drop the pressure for my coastal fishing trip... and now... I'm gettin' the same kinda' ride I had "BEFORE" I took the truck to this tire shop!
Hoping this tire shop would have an "answer" to my problem... I called them this week also. Talked with the guy who actually "DID" the work. Told him my little story and then asked him what pressure I should try running. He suggested... "40PSI!!!!" This is just spirialing out of control now! Anyway... he told me to drive the truck for the rest of the week and if things didn't improve by varying the pressure settings over the week (i.e. I've tried, 30psi, 35-37psi, & 40psi) then bring the truck in Sat. and they'd take a look at it. He said I "could have thrown a weight or 2 while on the beach?!
Anyway getting "ALL" this "CONFLITING" tire pressure info is "REALLY" pissing me off! Cause... the 1st thing that crosses "my" mind is... if I "CAN'T" get this tire pressure issue resolved properly... there's little doubt... that it's gonna' cause my tires to wear "prematurely"... ultimately causing me to have to "shell-out" another "700 Bucks"... WAAAAAY before... I should have to, on a new set of tires!
Any other TS members have any ideas?
Thanks,
Dave
