Backspacing

I understand that the factory 16x7 Tundra wheels have 4.75" backspacing.
Anybody know what it is on the 17x7.5's?

I have heard that 3.5" backspacing is the minimum to clear the calipers. Correct?

A lot of the wheel manufacturers only quote offset. What would be the offset of the factory wheels vs. a wheel with a backspace of 4"?

I'm not sure about the 2005's, but I believe the previous model years ran anywhere from a 0mm offset (or 4.5" backspacing) to a 15mm offset (approx. 4.6" backspacing). I'm not sure on the 17" wheels, but I'm sure it's very close to that. This site allows you to compare sizes and will convert offset to backspacing for you:

take a look at the diagram in the garage, it explains how backspacing, offset and other things are measured. clearing the calipers is a function of inner wheel shape and diameter--not all 16s will fit a tundra due to the shape of the wheel near the mounting surface. backspacing will change whether or not you hit the spindle, upper control arm, inner fenders etc. and changes the distance from the midpoint of the tire footprint to the hub. ideal dimensions would put the center of the tire footprint right at the axis of rotation of the ball joints...dunno what that is offhand, but i bet the stock wheels do it.
