This is a discussion thread titled "New tires which Interco tire should i get? (Tacoma)", within the Tires and Wheels forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I am lookin into getting some new tires. I am not sure wich ones.
the 3 I am looking at are Thornbirds, SSR Radial, Trexus Mud terrain.
My main questions are who eveer had any of these tires.
How are they on the road driving characteristics, are any of them really annoying that you wouldnt reccomend them. How well is the tread wear on them What kinda milage am i going to expect to get out of them. I am looking at the 32in size tire..nothing huge. I just want something that is gonna give me a decent amount of tire life isnt tooo nasty on the road. I was use to my old 32x11.50 BFG AT KO's. Any input on these 3 tires would be great.
Thanks
I've heard they're all good tires except for thornbirds. IMO thronbirds have a tread pattern that is not suited to ANYTHING except making alot of noise. They pack in the mud, they dig in the sand, and I don't want to even think what they would do in the snow. They do look cool though . And god forbid you have any rubbing with them, because before you know it, those giant lugs will rip your fender flare apart. I had a buddy that bought these, and junked them after about 500 miles. hope this helps ya, good luck.

hey bro, you buying these for looks or performance? b/c if you dont need them specifically offroad, seriously youre buying the wrong tires. the only one of those that won't be a pain on ice and in rain is the trxus, and honestly it could use some additional siping. none of those tires are "quiet"...they are all louder than the new bfg a/t k/o (i am running these in a 35 right now and really like them), and will be much worse when it's slick. the siping offered by interco on select models is similar to the big-o x/t tire, which i ran without a problem in a 32" with studs as a winter tire, and later in a 33--in colorado. here in ohio and in pittsburgh, and in colorado during rain storms, i could easily break traction, drift around turns, and just about totaled the truck once in an ice storm here in dayton (REALLY glad i have abs and an alaskan driving record). do NOT buy these tires in a wet climate to run on the road...theyre for wet climates OFF road (and dry climates--lotta guys in colorado run interco offroad).
interco makes great tires for running around offroad. none of their tires are meant for pounding pavement, even the trxus and sts--they are intended as trail tires with enough road manners to safely get a dual-use truck to the trailhead, where they will really shine.
the thornbird is arguably a poseur tire, as he said it's not really good for anything except looking and sounding like a mud tire on pavement. search for thornbird* on pirate4x4.com, you will find many "caught in the act" photos of people who thought a thornbird meant something offroad. granted, if you siped them thoroughly, they might be ok on the road, i dont know.
if you absolutely gotta get one of these to run pavement, get the trxus mt. it will wear "less bad" than the other tires on pavement, but none of these tires will be very good on the road except when it's bone dry. comments from a guy who ran these are that they wander, theyre incredibly noisy, they wear quickly, and they hurt gas mileage. in addition, they are very wide...they rubbed all sorts of things. in short, theyre a mud tire.
i kinda hate to hafta say it, but a set of bfg a/t k/o, or revos, or geolandars would be much better if youre gonna mall crawl, the intercos are definately burly looking but it's for a specific purpose. they are not meant for the road, only get them if youre gonna use them and have made allowances for additional clearance if necessary in the fender area, spindle and upper control arm.
that's the facts, mang...i'd love a set of 35x14.5 boggers (that'd be sweeet ) but they would be dedicated offroad tires, and cut & siped to allow me to safely make it to the trailhead in a rainstorm (cuz with tires like that, i wont care if it's wet & muddy offroad!).
hope that helps steer, im not trying to flame on but i'd hate to see somebody throw away close to a grand when they could get better performance for their application from a different tire, even if it doesnt "look" as good.

I had a friend who had the thornbirds on his ranger and later on his bronco. From what I saw they were not nearly what they are advertised to be. We got stuck in his ranger one time and the tires dug so bad his bumper was in the mud before he let up on it. I will tell you one thing though, the tires are definately not suited well for the street. He got maybe 20,000 miles out of them and paid nearly $800 for them. He is now running the Pro Comp all terains and is very happy with the swap. There are plenty of mud tires out there that are a much better compromise, especially when you have to use them on the street.
Well Actually I was lookin and I think I really like these tires. They are the Trxus STS A/T Radial tire and dont seem to be too too bad. These are the radial ones also
Anyone have these or any thoughts on them.
Thanks
My buddy has them on his heep sorry I mean Jeep. Just like all of the interco tires they are best suited for off road. He doesn't drive his jeep around town but off road they are great. Before this he had a set of thornbirds and hated them. I am running a set of toyo open counrty muds on my truck and love them.
I give up on the Interco....I am gonna go with a BFG dont know if I want AT or MT...Its gonna be on road alot is my daily driver...So I had the BFG AT 32x11.50 already and loved em. I was thinking about the MT cause they look sweet..But I read they dont do as well in snow, rain, and ice as well as the AT's
Get Procomp Xterrains. I love mine. They've got an aggressive tread look, great onroad handling and kick a$$ offroad. They supposedly get 40,000 miles. I've got 15 and no wear yet.

You can always try the Dick Cepeck Fun Country II's. Word is they drive in rain snow and pavement like the BFG AT, but handle the mud just a little better.
