Have a bone stock Tundra 4x4 DC w/TRD. I've been looking for the best tire for soft sand such as Pismo in CA as well as just driving to work. I've been going back and forth between BFG All Terrain AT or Mud Terrain MT.
What size would work best without any lifts? Are BFG Mud Terrain's worth it, or are ATs OK with the air pressure down? Would you recommend any other brand?
I've been at Pismo a year ago with those Rugged Trail tires, but stayed somewhat near the water (but not in!). Did get in some soft stuff a LITTLE bit inland, but had to keep it in 4wheel-lo and I had to use all my winter driving skills learned in western PA to keep from getting stuck ! I want get further inland on the dunes, but would feel more confident with better tires...
Thanks in advance,
John

The BFG AT KO's would "probably be your best best. The MT's are gonna "roar" somewhat, on the pavement. That just basically, boils down to whether you can live with the "noise", while on your morning commute. Fact is though... "either" tire will work well in soft sand, but I'd be more inclinded to go with the AT's. They won't "dig-in" nearly as bad as the MT's will, even if you don't air down the pressure of the AT's.

If driving in sand I found the all terrain to work better. I have had both on my desert truck and the All terrains work much better in the sand and they also last alot longer on the road as well. SO my vote is for the BFG All Terrain.

Also, if you're not dead-set on BFG's, give the Bridgestone Dueler AT Revo's a shot. I've used mine in the North Carolina Outer Banks sand and they perform great.

I endorse that opinion right there.
I frequent the Pismo Dunes in my 87 Cruiser, with Mud Tires on it, and it does pretty well (except for the lack of HP! ). I would have Revo's on it, but I take it to the mountains to play in the mud and crawl as well, so that takes priority.
But, I have never, ever, gotten stuck in my Cruiser with the Muds on it, and I have been everywhere on the dunes, all the way to the back, in the softest there is.
Moral of the story, you would be fine with either, but the Revo's would probably be the best AT you can buy if you want an AT (stay away from BFG AT IMOP) and if you want less road noise as Dave said, get the AT. My muds are very noisy at highway speeds, but I like it in my cruiser.

They (the BFG AT...not the MT...dont know which you are referring to) clog up too easy in the wet sand at pismo...I've pulled a few people out with BFG AT (that admittedly, didn't know where they were going and where to stay away from!)
They also clog up too easy in thick mud, like right after the rains up on Hi Mountain Road. The local LC guys stay away from them.. as a matter of fact, they all run Goodyear MTRs....which is my next tire.
IMOP, they (the BFG AT) are designed for on road driving, and occasional (read: 3 times a year) fire road driving.
Anyways, don't want to start a AT vs. MT thread. Just my experience and $.02.
Are you a Poly student, suprit?

I've run several sets of BFG Trail TA, AT and MT TKO's and have had the best of all worlds with the Mud Terrain- Hands down. The MT got better mileage (siped) than any of the others (40k), and also didn't hydroplane like the AT's did. ALso, the remark of being lound is rediculous! They are not loud, and you probably wouldn't even notice a differnce in sound to what your running now- especially if you have them siped.
I believe you can find a much better tire for the money though, as I've had better perfomance and mileage with the Toyo AT's, and really liked the Dean MT's (which look more like an aggresive AT) which has a real 50k mile warranty- I think will be my next tire, after the lift.
Good luck!

Nice. Just as good. Do you frequent the local trails? Big Falls (which is soon to be closed), Garcia Ridge, Pine Mountain, Twin Rocks, Pismo (obviously), etc.?

The tundra is my first truck, and i got it this January so i havent found many trails. I asked around with no luck on finding any trails besides pismo and cuesta ridge(by the radio tower). I'm down to go check out some new trails when i come move back to SLO this fall.
Sounds good. PM me when your back in town. I'm a Poly grad and work in Grover. Also check out http://www.realcruiser.com/slo/slolocalsonly.html. It is Jim Brantley's site for the SLO locals Toyota owners group. A majority of us own LC's, but most of us have Toyotas. We wheel quite a bit, when we're not busy. Email Jim (from the site) and get set up on the Forum. We talk through there for wheeling trips, wrenching sessions, mods, etc.
