Default Your Opinion...

FIRESTONE DESTINATION MT

Here's the deal...
As some of you guys may know, I've been looking into upgrading from my "stock" BFG R/T's to (something) in a 265/75/16, now that I've finally completed the 2" LIFT on my DC. The problem has always been, coming to grips with the fact, that I might as well throw the stock BFG's on a burning wood pile, with consideration to the VERY minimal "trade-in" value , which I've been offered, with only 3k on them at present. The expense which would be incured to "make" the change, was and has always been, simply... COST PROHIBATIVE... until this past weekend, that is. An opportunity to upgrade through an EVEN TRADE for ALL 4 TIRES, has presented itself with NO cost to me, other than the cost of mounting and balancing.

A friend of mine, just recently purchased a '98 4-Runner, for his soon-to-be, 16 year old daughter. From what I understand, the previous owner had JUST put this set of 4 Firestone Destination MT's on it. As a matter of fact, as I was also told, one of the front tires had a broken belt in it and as a courtesy to the previous owner, the tire shop replaced BOTH front tires, because the entire set of 4 was still within the warranty replacement window, which means those 2 front tires are practically brand new, with the 2 rear tires VERY close to new as well! Anyway, the daughter doesn't like them and wants something else. When I first saw this 4-Runner, I knew something wasn't quite right about it's height and upon further "up-close" inspection, I realized the truck has a 3" Revteck spacer lift kit on it, which allowed for the 265/75/16 FIRESTONE M/T's.

Anyway, unless another miracle just happens to fall into my lap like this one has, this will probably be THE ONLY chance I'll have to upgrade, until those BFG R/T's are worn out. And that could be... QUITE A WHILE... considering that I've now had my DC for over a year and it's only got 3k it!!

My question to you guys is... What's "your" opinion of the FIRESTONE DESTINATION MT? Please keep in mind, I DO realize, that these tires may not necessarily be the "best" tire out there, but I'm also trying to take into consideration, that I'm not driving my DC on a regular basis. Right now with gas prices as they are, it's become my "weekend ride". Plus as some of you know, I also have a '95 Tacoma and it too is in DIRE need of tires and since my little Taco is my daily driver and commuter of a 40 mile daily round trip, it's gotta' take priority over my DC! Plus I kinda' doubt that a set of M/T's would be a good... "commuter tire" anyway. Fact is, I wasn't actually looking for M/T's, but this "deal" is IMHO, just TOO GOOD TO PASS UP! However, over the past year and half, I've come to respect the opinions of this website's membership and having said that, I would value your input on this.

For what's it's worth... I see this as a way to FINALLY get those #*&@% BFG R/T's off my truck! And from the info I've gathered here at TS.com... "almost" anything has gotta'' be better!

Thanks in advance for your opinions guys... !

Dave

TundrastruckDave - if I read your post correctly, you would be getting two tires for "free". Are you going to buy two more to make a complete set? Or is it a set of 4 with two of them virtually brand new? From what I read about the tire it is an LT, so you will get a stiffer ride than on your current, errrr Rugged 'Piles'. I prefer the more truck-like ride myself plus if you tow or carry a moderately heavy load in the bed, the LT's are a better tire then the "P" rate 'Piles' on your truck now.

I would say get a fire started and bust out the weenies!

Dave,

I say go for it, as long as you intend to use them once and awhile (this would mean getting it dirty from time to time!). I have never run that tire nor do I know anyone who has, but you are right "anything is better than those rugged trails". Looking at the pics and reading the specs I would say they might be a tad noisy, but what Mud tire isn't. Oh and YOU WILL BE JOINING THE OFFROAD GROUP on next years Myrtle Beach Meet, RIGHT!!!!

tundrastruckdave, i say do it . you can either wait another 30,000 miles or so and get the tires you want( this might take you awhile), or you can make the trade get a better looking and better quality tire than the stockers and after 30,000 get the set you want (who knows you might stick with the firestones) the point is the tires you have on the truck are not the ones you want so why stick with a tire your unhappy with when you can take a chance on a tire that might be good but will definately look better on your truck with the lift. this is a once in a lifetime opportunity don't pass it up. plus it would give me an idea of how my truck would look with the 265/75-16's ha!ha! if and when you do this you better take some pics!

It is... ALL 4 TIRES! Sorry for the confusion. I've updated my original thread post to indicate, that it IS all 4 tires. The two front ones were recently replaced, because of a broken belt in one of them. So as a courtesy to the previous owner, the tire shop, replaced "both" front tires. As I understood it, because the previous owner had just recently bought all 4 Firestone M/T's, they were still under the warranty replacement window. Since the one tire with the broken belt was already on the front, they replaced both front tires to make everything "even", I guess.

In any case... IT IS ALL 4 TIRES!

I'd make the trade, but I'd be worried that the poor girl who gets the crap R/T's would wreck the first time she drove in the rain! I hate those pieces of crap tires too. So much in fact, that barring something unforseen, I'm taking them off after Christmas and replacing them with something. I'll have about 12k miles on them when they come off.

Looking at tirerack, the user opinions there look pretty positive. WAY better than the R/T's. You can't go wrong, really.

Default Hey guys...

can ya' help a brotha' out. I know this "ain't" the most interesting topic on the boards, but I value TS.com's member's opinions and KNOW there's gotta' be more than 5 guys here with an opinion on these tires!

If I gotta' beg-n-plead... well... O.K.! I am!

Cosmetically speaking only, the tread pattern looks fine but the side pattern is a bit too busy for my liking.

Looks like it has great reviews for what it is designed for, Mud and off road. It's a great deal for you $$ wise. You need to decide if it fits what your plans are for your DC. My only MT experience was my co-workers Wrangler with Good Year MT-R. Looks were awesome and aired down did great on the beach and off road. He said it was decent in the rain (as compared too his old worn out tires). He complained about the noise as he had 15 miles highway to drive each way. It was a safety hazard in the snow due too lack of siping and hard rubber to the point he bought different tires. I don't off road much so for me would be a bad choice as I need excellent dry, wet, snow, low rolling resistance on-road traction. On the same note the truck would look very aggressive for that "I'm the man" factor.

Unfortunately, the owner of the 4-Runner seems to be in no big hurry to make the swap! I'm "guessing", it's got something to do with the fact that he bought the 4-Runner for his daughter, who turns 16 real soon. And, since she's not 16 yet, they just haven't pursued this swap. Guess it's not at the "top" of his list, until his daughter turns 16?! Matter of fact, I spoke with his son, on Sunday, the 15th of Oct. and he said they haven't even driven the 4-Runner since Oct. the 9th, when we all returned from a fishing trip to Hatteras Island! The son, said things were still on go, but it's his "dad", who's the final say on this "trade" anyway. I don't want to look "too" anxious obviously, but it's getting to the point where, I'm gonna' have to just ask him about it!

In any case, still waiting and crossing my fingers at present... !
