    Default Lug nut problem?

Yesterday I mounted my new black wheelers alloys on my DC with my new snow tires. I am very pleased with the look, but one problem - the lug nuts seem like they are not keeping their torque. First drive was 5 miles, had to tighten them up, then today took it out for a 25 mile run and they were even looser. I am torqing to spec (83 ft. lb.). One possiblity is the black powder coat is very slippery and soft to pressure. My real concern is these lug nuts required a 13/16 socket, not the normeal 21MM. Could this mean these are "American" threads and not "Metric." Help!

    Exclamation Re: Lug nut problem?

More info... I did some more research in my garage and on the net and found that the Lug size is 12MM with 1.5 threads for our Tundras. I checked the tapered lug nuts for the wheel and they are indeed the 12 x 1.5. But in comparision to the factory lug nuts they are less beefy threads IMO (Factory threads are squared off on the top of each thread).

Still have a problem... When I took my lug nut off tonight it just came off with little effort, I mean nothing to it!!! This is not good. I am going over the pass this weekend and need to have this resolved. Any comments would be great.

hmmmm.... it's hard to guess without seeing your setup. if the nuts thread on right, you should be able to torque them unless there is some give somewhere in the system. if you replaced your studs, i would suggest that maybe 83 ft-lbs wasn't enough to seat the stud in the back of the rotor/drum and after driving they snugged up explaining the looseness on the nut side. otherwise, maybe the wheel is compressing somehow?

notice any metal shavings or anything that would provide a clue? any lube inside the nuts?

you mentioned tapered lug nuts. are those the acorn style for the factory steel rims? i'm assuming the new lug nuts came with the rims from the rim manufacterer and are the correct style for the rims?

i'm at a loss here without more info... sorry! perhaps it is the threads. if the lug nuts are too soft and don't grab right, that might be your answer. i would definitely be careful and try to get it solved before you do any long or dangerous trips.

These are the acorn lug nuts that were sold with the wheelers black alloys, no metal shavings, correct size for the threads (12x1.5). I am totally at a loss. I have thought about taking sand paper to the holes in the wheel where the nut seats and scratch off that shiny black poweder coat so the nuts have a chance to bite and hold.

    don't do that!!!!

sounds nuts but even locktight might be a better start than scratching the powdercoat!

Snowtruck - I'm interested in some black steel wheels for my Tundra. I've been searching the web but can't find a Wheelers site. Where did you get yours? Thanks.
