Do tire shops use a different machine to mount tires onto alloy wheels or do they use the same machine they use for installing tires onto steel wheels?
I just wondered if the alloy's will get scuffed when changing tires and whether I should be looking for a tire shop that knows how to change tires safely onto alloy wheels.
They use the same machine for both. There are precautions they can take to ensure that the wheel is not scratched.

Might not be a bad idea to reinforce that thought, by TELLING the shop of your choice to... be careful... when mounting the tires! Basically that's politely letting them know... they'd better not scratch the wheels.
Like I said... just a little FYI and Precautionary Thought.... .

What if they do scratch it? What could I do?
Tundrastruck Dave (side note),
Does the Colgan Bra on your truck, have small puckering around the front edge of the hood, near the ends. Mine is new and I'm having a hard time getting the hood piece to fit smoothly along the left and right sides. About 3 inches in from each end is where it puckers. It doesn't seem to fit nice along the edges, seems a bit small. I don't know if this will stretch and loosen with time?
Well, if you tell the shop your concerns... BEFORE... they begin the work, I suppose you could ask... can they handle it and what will "they" do, if they do damage one of the wheels. My suspicions are... once you ask them this... if they "can't" do it without the possibly scratching a wheel, they'll just say they can't do it. I think I'd MUCH rather have them tell me "no", than have them "think" they can do it and end up damaging one. You could even ask... what precuations will they take, to prevent damage while mounting the tires. At least that lets them know, you'll be looking for damage... .

I think that little bit of puckering is probably normal. It will stretch some and some of that puckering may disappear. However, you probably "should" wait for a good warm day before you try it to intall it anyway. And yes, the "hood" section is the most difficult part of the installation. Just wait until you get a good warm day and set the bra out for a while in the sun. I promise... it'll be easier to put on.

They should be using machines designed for use with alloy wheels, but that doesn't mean they do. Such machines take care not to scrape tools around the rim, and the tools that do contact the rim are coated with a slick plastic to keep them from scratching.
