Post Yokohama vs BFG

All this talk about Bridgestone AT this, MT that. What about Yokohama? I went tire shopping at tirerack.com , hmmmed and hawwed, looked and scratched and found the Yokohama Geolander AT II (285/75R-16). Very agressive looking tread pattern, quiet on the road (as compared to the stock Dunlops), great traction. tirerack has a rating system to compare tires and the Yokahama ranked head to head with the BFG AT. The only knock I could find was treadwear, but hey, 40,000 mi waranty. What sold me was the price. $104.00 vs $159.00 for the BFG's. Yowza!!

I felt the same way and ended up with a set of the Geolanders IIs. At just over a $100 (265/75R16), I just couldn't see paying 50% more for the BFGs.

I've got close to 20K on mine, and they've provided excellent traction on and off the road, they balance out well, and they're wearing very well. The only downside would be that I found them to be a bit noisier than the stock BFGs they replaced, with some "humming" at speeds above 40 mph, but it's nothing like a mud tire.

Good luck,
T

I thought the YOKO's where directional??? thats a big downside IMO. I was and still thinking about going with the AXIS TUNDRA's setup (yoko geolander m/t 285) with AXIS regulators. But instead went with bfg a/t and Mickey Thompson calssic II's. I like it and it saved me 700.

Are you saying that your Yokohamas are actually quieter than your stock Dunlops that were on there from Toyota. Or just that you thought they were quieter than Dunlops AT.

That's kind of like comparing apples to oranges and if that's true, than those Yokos are really quiet. That's a *very* aggressive tread to be that quiet.

How is the ride compared to the Dunlops though?

Default tire noise

I guess what I am trying to say is that I have not noticed that the yoko's are any louder, or quieter, than the stock Dunlops. to be honest, I was anticipating some extra hum with these, but It just didn't materialize. Maybe it has something to do with the tread groves being generally subparallel, and not perp. to the direction of travel?? Handling is nice, good traction. Although, with the higher stance accosiated with my bigger tires and lift (3 1/2 inches) you can feel the shift in the center of gravity. Have no complaints, other than having to pick gravel out of the treads once in awhile.
