Default Trailer Rental

I'm planning on towing my car to the track (~250mi) in a couple weeks. Haven't yet purchased a trailer, so I'm thinking about renting one from Uhaul.

Any thoughts/suggestions??

check over it. have them hook it up for you and double check everything... pull it around the block and make sure everything is in working order. you do know budget rents really nice car haulers. much new equipment than uhaul and safer than a car dolly. fyi.

cheers

Budget and Penski will only allow their trailers to be pulled by their trucks.

U-Haul will probably have surge brakes on the trailer. OK if your not going thru steep grades. Don't let them Gerry Rig your trailer light connections to their trailer.

huh, i rented a car carrier and pulled it with a 2500 CTD from missouri to moab for EJS two years ago. maybe they have different rules/different places or they just didn't care.... either way ive rented uhaul stuff for a long time (12 years military) and sometimes they have some real junk.

cheers

Are you going to load a lowered car? If so, you may have to bring some 2x6s to get the car to go up the relatively short ramps. Have someone help you load up. Also, will your wheels accept the metal loops on tire straps? Mine do not, so I use special tie down points. Be careful, especially in the back, that the crossed straps clear the exhaust. I cross both front and rear straps. I tow with the car in neutral, and the parking brake off. This might seem like a risk, but is the standard way it is done, and does not stress those parts. I've been towing a race car for many years, and these are some of the things I have learned.
PM me if you need any help.

It does appear as though Uhaul is the only renter who will allow you to tow their trailer with your truck, but I'll have to do more research to be sure.

Obviously, I'm concerned about the age/condition/maintenance of the uhaul trailer.

Unfortunately, my wheels will not accept the metal loops on the tire straps.

According to the Uhaul website, the trailer does have shock brakes. What does this mean?

Should I expect some modifications to be required to allow the lighting/braking systems for the trailer to interface with the truck? BTW, there is absolutely no way I would let the guys at the uhaul rental alter anything on my truck.

Thanks for all the replies

The bigger Uhaul trailers have "surge" brakes. When you start to brake, the trailer pushes forward against some sort of actuator on the hitch coupler that then in turn activates the brakes on the trailer. ALL Uhaul trailers use a 4-pin connector for the lights.

As far as Budget and Penski, I was looking into renting a car dolly or a car hauler and both of their websites stated that their trailers can only be pulled by their trucks.
