Re: Quick Question- 03 Tacoma 4 cyl auto .... how much?
I've towed with a 97 2.4 and with my 05 2.7. The 97 was an automatic. My experience has been that up to about 2500 lbs is fairly comfortable. Staying out of overdrive you can maintain freeway speeds perhaps dropping down to 50 or 55 on steeper hills.
Also the profile of the trailer makes a big difference. If the trailer doesn't represent a lot of wind resistance you'll be better off.
For short distances you could probably go up to the max rated - about 3500 lbs. minus your weight, passengers, gas and anything in the bed.
Also, if you're going to tow often or in hot weather you will want a transmission cooler.
But most important is to make sure you can stop. I don't feel safe towing anything over 2000 lbs without trailer brakes. You'll read all sorts of stories about how someone towed something heavy and never had any problems. But believe me - if you have to stop fast and in a straight line you need trailer brakes!
