Default Being to careful?

I'm going to be picking up a 6X14 V-Nose cargo trailer (GVRW-2990, Curbweight-1460) this weekend. It's a single axle trailer. Would I be too prudent to get trailer brakes installed? I have an 06DC 4X4 with the towing package so all I would have to do is plug in the brake controller but I want to make sure it isn't overkill?!

Also I have a 7 to 4 pin adapter for pulling random non-brake trailers, will I have any issues after I install the brake controller when pulling a "regular" trailer?

Thanks for the help!

Hi,

IMHO, I don't think you being too careful, especially if your going to fully load it and use it a fair amount. The tundra can handle stopping that trailer without brakes, just keep in mind your stopping distance will be increased. I would get the brakes with it since it could be the difference between avoiding an accident and having one in emergency stop scenerios where someone runs a light or cuts you off.

I would see what type of brakes you can get with the trailer, if hydraulic/pressure activated brakes are all you can get on it, the brake controller is of no use to you.

If the trailer does have a "brake by wire" actuator, and you install the brake controller, you won't interfere with towing things that have a 4 pin, as your 7 to 4 convertor only propigates the signals for: brake lights, running lights, and turn signals.

Hope this helps.
