First let me say, I've been driving trucks with blind spot mirrors for about 12 years now. My last truck was a dodge with the towing mirrors and I drive a large Utility truck for the local utility company everyday.
Am I the only one that thinks the Toyota towing mirrors are hard to use. It feels like the blind spot mirror is to short from top to bottom. Width is fine. When I use the blind spot mirror I like to see the lane next to me from my rear door to my rear wheel well or to the corner of my back bumper. The mirror is so narrow its hard to get a full picture. Also, I wish it was attached some how to the upper mirror so that it moved with the power mirrors.
Owned it for three weeks and this is my only complaint. I can live with it but wanted to get other opinons.
Yes I agree but it isn't that big of a deal. I'd like to see the full vehicle (roof to tire) in the other lane AND my back tire for backing. Seems like it is one or the other.
concur...they took a while to get used to and the convex mirror is a little "limited" due to its size. the big passenger side mirror should be a little convexed as well. there is definitely a blind spot using just the mirrors...the blind spot i sometimes get is because the mirrors are so big and can't see behind (in front of) the mirrors.
Ya, the blind spots that these poorly positioned mirrors create can be un-nerving. Trust me, you get used to it pretty fast. I have a DCSB TRD with the standard mirrors. I put small convex mirrors on them and they work GREAT. I have NO blind spots (to my side or behind me). I can also see my wheel for backing into a tight spot.
I test drove today and did decide to buy and put down a deposit but I was a bit bothered by the blind spot.
No, not just you. I'm coming from an F250 with true wide angle convex mirrors... objects are definitely closer than they appear, but I had a good wide view with little to no blind spot. Toyota didn't make these wide angle enough or something. In fact, to me cars appear [I]closer[I] in the little mirrors than they actually are! I cant figure out why that is but it took me 3 days of tweaking to get the small mirrors close to being right. I still have a little bit of a blind spot and I'm still thinking of putting the little stick-on discs on there somewhere.
Yeah..what I think it is that the passenger mirror on every other car ever made has the convex "objects are closer than they appear" design and the big mirror doesn't have enough field of view which causes you to look at the thing too long.
hmm, I think I have a rectangular fisheye one from walmart somewhere. maybe I'll stick it on.
Can one of y'all post a picture of what has worked in this regard (placement of the sticky mirror) - or where on the big one did you put it (outside? top? bottom?)
If your mirrors are correctly placed you should not have "Blind Spots". Most people (me included) set their side mirrors where they can see the side of the vehicle. The 2 side mirrors and rear view mirror should make up composite view of the rear. You should not be able to see something in more than one mirror (except for the lower convex mirrors).
If for example, imagine there was a giant ruler behind your truck with 8 in the center, you should see 2 3 4 5 in your driver's side mirror 6 7 8 9 10 in the rearview and 11 12 13 14 in the passenger's side mirror. Most people have it setup like this 3 4 5 6 then 6 7 8 9 10 and 10 11 12 13.
I have always set my mirrors "incorrectly" on all my cars till I had the tow mirrors installed on the truck. I never set up my cars like this because when I did, my wife complained and set them back. She doesn't drive my truck though. Setting up your mirrors take some getting used to. It works well for me, along with the convex mirrors, you can see a lot.
Just did a google search "setting your mirrors" there are other articles on this exact thing.
my trd came with tow mirrors. I did not like them at all. I felt like when I glanced out the passanger window all I could see was mirror. Two weeks Later I had a mirror swap. I love the smaller mirror, They are huge.
Also felt like the tow mirrors hung way too far off the truck. They just look too big for the truck too me. If you look at the truck from a distance it looks like a nice pair a mirrors with a small truck attached too them.
