Here is my question: No where in the owners manual does it state anything about towing in manual mode or in the Automatic 6 speed mode. If you put on the tow/haul button, does it liock you out of 6th gear? On my old Dodge, it stated never tow in OD. Therer is no OD mode on the Toyota. I have a concern that a heavy load may prematurley wear out the internal clutches. Should you only tow using the tiptronic and never put in 6th gear??
donno..... but you cannot use tow/haul with "S".... only with "D"..... Also, the Tundra does not have a tiptronic shift..... it has a sequential shift. You cannot click it into a certain gear.... you can only tell it what gear to limit as the top gear. For example... if you set it to 5.... you will never get to sixth gear or if you set it to 3 you will never get to fourth gear
I have towed a total of 2200 miles and I strictly use "D" and Tow/Haul - no issues

25-30 ft Travel Trailer....... bye bye Pop-Up
Yup... just use the "Tow/Haul" button. That will set up a different shift pattern to deal with the additional weight. It does not lock out 6th gear, but it rarely goes into that gear due to the additional load.

You should never tow a lot of weight in 6th. You should keep it in 5th to keep up your RPM's, which keeps the engine cooler via increased water pump circulation, and puts less wear non your tranny. Bogging your engine down in 6th is a bad idea unless your trailer weight is pretty light, i.e under 5k lbs. If you try to tow a lot more in 6th, expect a lot of downshifting also. Just opinion from experience.

I have towed with my Tundra quite a bit...that's why I bought it. I tow a pontoon boat, 3200#, and a 25' travel trailer, 5800#. I always tow in "D", with the tow haul mode on. I can assure you that towing anything heavy will prevent the trans from going into 6th gear. Towing on flat ground, with no wind, at 60mph the transmission will sometimes go into 6th. Any slight incline will cause a down-shift from 6th to 5th or 5th to 4th. Using the cruise will cause constant up and down-shifts and your mpg will be horrible. I only used the "S" mode when going down a long incline, the engine braking really works great.
