Default Towing question?

08 trundra grade dbl cab 5.7 no tow package
Have had several taco's and tundras and have yet to tow anything but Im curious. Sales sticker on truck says tow capacity 5000. When I look at toyota sight specs it says either 8700 or 10,300 or somthing close to that depending on which line you read that shows same vehicle. How do you know?

I think if you recheck you'll find the towing capacity is 10,000 something. That's what the owner's manual, showroom brochures, etc, say.

It might have a lower tow capacity because you don't have the Tow Package. The TP comes with a trans cooler, a trans temp gauge, and the Tow/Haul switch for the trans, which changes the shift points in the transmission. How much weight do you plan on towing??

If I look on the toyota sight it shows my truck listed with a tow pack number and without. The next line shows my truck again with the larger number and no reference to tow package (larger number is 10300)

I traded an 05 sr5 crew that was loaded up pretty nicely for this 08 tundra grade whos only claim to fame really is the big engine. I have to confess, I have no immediate plans to tow anything but just wante to know what it would do If I wanted to.

Toyota might be refering to how much you can tow from the rear bumper if you don't have the tow package.
just a thought i could be wrong but usually the bumper is way less than the tow package.
i'm sure if you wanted to upgrade you can buy all the parts to do so.

I believe the Tow Pkg. also has an engine oil cooler, power steering cooler and 4.30 ring and pinion gears.

That might be the answer. Do you have the frame mounted hitch receiver as well as the bumper hitch? The bumper hitch will have a much lower tow rating.

If I'm not mistaken, all 5.7 equiped Tundras have the tow package. They change this for 08?

That's it. Bumper tow is always 5000 lbs. Good call.

Don't think so. Lot's of Sport Appearance Pkg 5.7s out there and none of them have the tow pkg, I don't believe.

That's right. . . as I was trying to "build" my Tundra on line, if you selected sports appearance, tow package got auto-deleted. Can't have both.

Tow package is standard on the SR5 I believe but not on Tundra Grade.

Lets see if I have this right.
So the towing capacity (without package) would be 5k from the bumber.
but If I installed the frame mounted hitch receiver it would increase to the 8000+. And if I got the tow package with the transmision upgrades etc,
it would increase to 10k+

Plus the other 2 coolers and the 4.30 rear end gears.

I will also add that the SR5 is a pretty good upgrade for about 1000.00.
Tow package, privacy glass, power bucket seats, sliding rear window, mud flaps,
"style" steeled wheels, fog lights. and if its with the 5.7 you get the transmison temp gauge on the dash i think as well. I wish I had done it. I turned in an 05 SR5 crew lease for the 08 Grade. No SR5's around that werent loaded up. I got the 5.7 but lost a few nice goodies.

I maybe wrong but I don't think SR5 includes power seats, sliding window, mud flaps, fog lamps, or styled steel wheels.
