Do you already have the OEM 4 pin connector?

You need an adapter (really just a fuse holder and special plug) to attach to your battery + terminal to send power back to the tail light adapter you need to buy.

You need a 30 amp auto-reset circuit breaker and #10 wire to feed the charging line for your trailer battery.

You need the wire size and circuit breaker specified by your brake controller.

You need the 7-pin connector.

You'd be really smart to run a #10 negative wire (or two #14 wires) from the 7-pin connector back to the battery negative post. No way you can be too safe when it comes to the brake circuit.

The tail light adapter and the brake controller will all have their wiring diagrams. There are a couple of makers of these adapters, and they're sold under several brand names. Any trailer supply shop or good auto parts store can get them for you. The 2000 Tundra takes a different adapter from the other model-years. I sound like a broken record, but only consider either a Tekonsha Prodigy brake controller or a Jordan Ultima controller. They're far better than anything else, and only cost a bit more...money well spent.

Never use wire nuts. Crimp connectors shouldn't be used on the brake circuit. For safety, solder the connections and cover with heat-shrink tubing. Be sure that the connectors you use are able to handle the amperage, i. e., 30 amps for the charging wire, 20 or 30 amps for the brake circuit, etc.

Then you are 1/2 way there. Basically you need to cut off the 4-pin flat connector and wire in a 7-way. The 4-way provides right turn & brake lights, left turn & brake lights, tail (running) lights, and Ground.

For the 7-way you need Backup lights, Electric Trailer Barkes and Aux Power/Battery Charge. The Backup Lights can be picked up from the T-6 Trailer Connector - Wiring schematic is available in the "Garage" forums. You will need to install a brake controller and run the wire for the Electric Trailer Brakes from the cab back to the plug. For the Aux Power/Battery Charge you will need to run this to the plug also.

You should refer to the following "Garage" topics:
