Re: largest truck camper/lst gen toyota
Newb here...this is my first post.
I am a lifelong devoted Toyota guy, but I never owned a truck.
I joined this site, specifically, to ask about campers (not shells).
I am looking at buying a 1rst gen Tundra (I already own a Toyota and a Lexus) for the purose of putting a camper on top.
My other option is looking at a Toyota based motorhome, but now we are talking 1993 or older. I would have a better peace of mind if I could get a newer Toyota to haul it.
My motivation is that I trust the engine and powertrain of a Tundra to take me far distances so it is either a Tundra-camper combo or not getting a Tundra.
I have the same question as dlazoran.
It seems as if Tundras are not used too much for campers, is this due to limitations on the rear axels? I believe that liability concerns with overloading the rear axels were why Toyota got out of the motorhome business.
Fully loaded, with camper and additional supplies....how much weight can we safely haul?
Can someone recommend a good camper at a cheap price?
I don't need anything but a nice roomy place for 2 adults to sleep but bigger than a shell. I don't even need water hook ups if that will save me money, but would probably want AC as summers are brutal where I will be traveling.
Thanks in advance.
Edit: After reading some other posts, I see that the first gen Tundras can add a camper with a dry weight of 1000 lbs (2WD). Northern Lite has a 6'10" slide in that weighs 1050 lbs.
So, the best case scenario with a hard side slide in will be right at the limit, which is not something I am comfortable with.
My last ditch solution would be a reputable after market method to increase the payload capacity or if the 2nd gen Tundra increased their capacity.
Actually, my real last ditch solution would be to go to another brand, but then I would have some concerns regarding reliability (no offense intended to anyone with a non Toyota truck).
