I have been searching to find a link to the recall list for the 2000 Tundra.
I have found hints to a recall on the tow/trailer wiring harness. Where can I read this recall?
I have a Regional installed Reese Hitch and the wiring is acting up. Toyota of Gastonia (part of Scott Clark Toyota of Charlotte) wants $320+ to fix it.
They say that since it is not Factory installed ( was done new by regional distributor) i am S.O.L.
I asked about a recall and was told yes but not for the REESE Hitch.
If I remember correctly the trailer wire converter cost around $20-$30. I bought one for my wifes camry from Fleet Farm if you have one of those in your area.

I am just out of warranty.
If you are a Tundra Solutions member, and look at the Toyota Service Bulletins (TSB's) for your particular vehicle at the bottom of this link:
You will find the one for the wiring harness (AX006-02). I had mine fixed under warranty by Toyota about six months ago, no problem. You might be able to also if they see the TSB.
Your hitch receiver has nothing to do with your trailer wiring.
Whatever "acting up" might be, it could be as simple as a bad ground connection, a bad crimp connection, or something as simple as that. If your trailer wiring adapters are Reese brand (or Draw-Tite, or Wesbar, or NAPA, or U-Haul...all the same thing with different labels), they're probably fine.
Take your truck to a trailer repair shop or an auto electric shop. Forget the money grubbing dealers.
I'm pretty sure this was a safety recall rather than a TSB. I remember getting a letter from Toyota asking me to bring my truck to the dealer for repair/replacement of a possible defective wiring harness. Mine didn't have a tow package, so I chucked it.

I have not had any progress dealing with the service manager at Toyota of Gastonia on the Trailer Wiring Harness. I am being told it does not apply to my vehicle.
I am trying Customer Service as we speak.
Any suggestions on how to deal with National Toyota service?
C'daddy,
What does "acting up" mean? If it is intermittent lights on/ off or "flicker", it is prob a ground as KLS mentions.
I have the Toy OE hitch on my 2000. And i have the recall notice in the glove box. I never took it in and have no probs @ ~72K miles to date.
My trailer bought off a trailer lot here in Calif. was wired completely wrong when i got it, had to re-wire it! The left running light was always in the brake mode. It works fine now. Stripped all the old cable off & rewired it. BTW, they used the cheapest wire cable, small gage wire, and their crimps are poor. Their plastic license plate holder are POS too.
Don't forget to check the hitch ball nut every now and then with a large crescent wrench as they can loosen even though they have the split pressure washer on them. The nut should have a hole thru the edge to safety wire, but none do. Always pull hard up on the hitch, if you can, when trailer installed to insure it is latched. Put a bit of grease on the ball head and a cover when not in use, etc.
Skip Toyota, the time, money, headaches! aren't worth it. Take it to an RV center, electric shop, etc., bring your trailer. It ain't Rocket Science to these folks and should be easy to remedy.
Thanks but its not the trailer.
The left turn signal/brake light will not light up.
The problem is the wiring harness module.
If you look up from underneith and behind the spare tire. The REESE module is bad. This part can be bought at Home Depot for about $35. It is fastened with 2 sided tape and is not hardwired- it plugs in to the system. It takes all of about 45 seconds to replace.
I was origanally billed $140 plus $85 for 2 hours of labor.
This is my second and last bad experience with this dealership.
I can get a New hitch installed and wired for $150 at Pep Boys.
I have a 2007 Tundra and wired my brake controller according to the manufacturer of the controller. All works great. Towed travel trailer for first time and no problems what so ever. Set cruise on 60 and that is where it stayed.
