Default Towing a Taco with a Taco?

Just curious if anyone has ever towed a Tacoma with another Tacoma, my buddy and I go wheeling way up in PA at a place called Raush Creek, Great place, Anyhow we thought it would be better to not have to drive both vehicles up. We were thinking of a Uhaul Auto transport. Just wondering if anyone has towed a Tacoma with a Tacoma? They are both Access cabs 6-speed manuals 4x4. I know we are RIGHT at the weight limit, and RIGHT at the width limit of the Uhaul trailer. But not at the limit of the towing capacity 6,500. Curb weight of the Truck is 3965 and the trailer weighs in at 2,000 lbs. I'm used to trailering a 30 foot utility trailer, covered with a Ford F150 (for work) but have yet to put the Tacoma to the test.

Any input would be appreciated.

My experience towing with a 98 taco, is that your mileage will be cut in half. And you'd probably get there faster driving empty.

The only other things to consider would be tire wear, etc...

If it were me, i'd probably just drive both rigs down instead of towing the other.

U-Haul is not going to rent you a trailer based on what you've told us. They have a rule that the car/truck to be towed can't be more than 70-80% of the weight of the truck that's pulling it. So, unless you tell them your towing a civic or other compact car forget it.

Personally, I think your end up spending more in gas and trailer rental fee's than it's worth. Unless you just really want your buddy riding shot gun next to you....

Close. the rule is the tow vehicle has to weigh at least 80% of the total trailer+vehicle weight. So in your case, 2000+3950=5950. 80% of 5950 is 4760. The tow vehicle would have to weigh at least 4760lbs in order for Uhaul to rent the trailer to you for that set up.

We all know you can fudge things with U-haul to get the trailer, the reason for not wanting to drive up in both trucks is it's a LONG day, seems to be cheaper to rent the uhaul than to get a hotel room. So that way on the way home, which is usually the problem after wheeling all day, we can switch off driving back. We start out at the *** crack of dawn, drive 2+ hours there, wheel for like 5-6 hours, then grab a bite to eat then it's 2+ hours again. Last time I pretty much had to pull over becuase I was feeling like I was going to fall asleep at the wheel!

So all those issues aside, from a 'can it do it' standpoint. Would the taco y taco combination work?

I think you should have no problem doing it. Check all the normal stuff like the brakes on the trailer, make sure to load the truck so you have the proper amount of tongue weight (10-15 % of the total towed weight, not to exceed the gvwr of the truck), etc. If you are mindful of all these things you should be fine and should save a little money too. (expect 10-12 mpg towing) I understand all the reasons behind not wanting to drive separately and I think you have a good option here.

If you want to rent a uhaul, tell them you are towing a Suzuki Samurai. That's what I used to do. You probably wont save any money at all since you will be getting about 9 mpg's and paying quite a bit for the trailer rental. With that being said, your Tacoma will pull the Tacoma fine. If one of the Tacoma's has some sort of helper springs or the 4 leaf pack use that one to tow, other wise there will be a substantial amount of sag (especially because you wont be able to move the Tacoma around much on the trailer since it has a rather long wheel base).

From a "can it do standpoint" it would work! Go for it if you feel it will save you money. I tow a much less wind resistant and heavier FJ40 with my Tacoma and it tows much better than you would expect a midsize to tow.
