go for it. look how many people out there tow way over capacity with older trucks all the time....so if ur right at or just under max u should be fine IMO
I am considering a 7000 lbs trailer, dry weight. Loaded it would approach 10K. Does anyone tow 10K on a regular basis?
How much weight do you tow with your Tundra?
Are you towing on hilly terrain?
Anyone's experience would ge appreciated.
Dude this truck has a friggin DANA 80! It will pull cabins up to the lakes for heavens sakes!! It has a tranny cooler, oil cooler, you name it. It will pull 10k lbs all day long no sweat. Only thing that will be affected will be your mpg which would probably drop a LOT pulling 10k lbs on rough and hilly terrain. Other than that the truck will handle it no problem.

Check out my pics in the gallery.
I pull a trailer that weighs in at 6,875 or some where in that range.
if your not dry camping no need to haul your water. so you can save weight there. plus 99% of trailer owners never max the trailer weight out. if i go with the wife and dog and 2 relatives i would guess with all the clothes and food the wifes mocha maker lol that we have way less than 900 pounds for a week. i usually will haul maybe 1/3 on the fresh water just because of pit stops along the way.
I have been up some big hills and it will slow down on the really big ones i actually hit one that had me revin and at 50 mph at the top but no big deal.
the only thing to think about is mpg my trailer is 29ft and i live in washington state. i have a lot of hills on the way to some of the parks and i can get as low as 7.5 mpg and no higher than 9mpg if i was going to buy another trailer i might go with a 26 just to keep from refueling so much. i have read that most people with 26ft trailers get 11 to 12
all in all the truck handles it fine but you need to know the mileage will suffer with the 29 or 30 ft. trailers

You guys with these big heavy trailers ever think of getting an auxiliary fuel tank?? I have a friend with an F-350 turbo diesel that pulls an enclosed 2 car trailer to car shows around the country and she has a 50 gallon auxiliary fuel tank in the bed of her truck...where the truck toolbox would usually be mounted. Definitely helps on your range between fill ups.

Yeah do it! Hell tow a 13,500 5th wheel wheel the Tundra can do it. Everyone I know is selling their 1 ton trucks and buying the Tundra because it way tougher, can out haul and out tow.

Dude towing 10k lbs is still within the limits of the Tundra. As we mentioned it will tow that all day long but will get poor mpg. Thanks for popping in and reminding us that we don't have 1 ton trucks...we already know this. With the amount that you cut down the Tundra's abilities it makes it hard for me to believe that you actually drive one. Some Dodge diesels are rated for towing 16k lbs from the factory and we see many Dodge owners towing 16k lbs all day long...so if our weak little Tundra is rated at 10,800lbs what makes it not okay to tow just under 10k lbs??

Go visit the towing forum on this site and you'll get a lot of info.
The 7000lb dry weight of your trailer will only be about 8k when loaded. Unless you throw in the kitchen sink before you go. lol
I've been towing trailers for over 20 years, and i can honestly say the tundra is built well for towing trailers under 10k. Toyota did a fine job with this truck that way.
I pull a 25' 5er that weighs 6250 dry & 7520 mostly loaded for camping, and the truck does very well. We have a lot of hills here in Utah and i have yet to come to any hill and not be able to gain speed. What's so nice about it is the extra gear you have on the big hills. Most hills I can pull in 4th, but when i get to a good hill I have 3rd which is available all the way to 90 mph & it kicks @$$.
I also tow a 4500lb aluminum 4- horse trailer that weighs in at around 9k when loaded with 4 horses. I would tow this every single day and not worry at all about my truck. It does it very well.
No other manufacturer on the planet (yet) makes a gasser that can compete with the 5.7 tundra in the towing dept. It's actually pretty close to knocking on the doors of the oil burners. You may get a little better mpg with the diesel's (like 10-15%), but you sure as he!! won't save any money with the cost of diesel right now.
I get 8-11 mpg while towing either trailer depending on speed, mph, & terrain. I usually drive 70-75 while towing.
My 5er is a 29ft, loaded under 7400 lbs would I go heavier, yes. I get from 7.5 to 10.5 towing and the Tundra just loves the hills. I tow some awfull hills in N.h. Maine ,New York,Vermont, and from New York to Florida. I would look at half ton towable campers up to 31 ft. Try to keep pin weight below 1600lbs, mine is 1240 dry. Pull it and love it, see you on the road.
