This is a discussion thread titled "Can I haul this Gearbox Hauler?", within the Towing forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
With my 08 Tundra 5.7 TRD, would I have any issues with hauling this 5th wheel toy hauler I am looking at? I certainly would not come close to the cargo weight capacity. I'd probably be looking at hauling upwards of 1000lbs in the cargo max.
Any feedback on the 5th wheel set up and the dimensions for hauling listed below would be appreciated. Thanks
Go for it. As long as you're not exceeding 10,800lbs the only negative thing you might experience is a large drop in mpg. Other than that the truck is up to the task. Sounds like you'll be around 9k to 9500lbs so that should be fine IMO. Be sure to take pics of the setup once you get it all hooked up.

You need to go to a dealer and look in the cabinets and see what the weights actually are. Dry weight is 8250 but that doesn't include any of the extras, like a/c, furnace, fuel station etc. It also doesn't take into account for the weights of water, what size tank? water is 8lbs per gallon. Liquid Propane or batteries.
Find one at the dealership or if this is a private sale, go look at it. Inside the cabinet there is a print out of all the weights as the trailer comes. I would bet dollars to donuts that that trailer is already really close 10,000 lbs as it sits with all the options. Not to mention if you are going to put a Rino or quads in it.

ARE YOU THINKING ABOUT MAKING A NEW POST??? TRY SEARCH FIRST!!!!!
Go to my string "5th wheel tow...springs or airbags". I went through a learning curve prior to buying my new fiver and towing it. I would say Firestone Airbags are a absolute inescapable requirement and you will want about 40 psig in them. A good electric brake controller like the P3.
Probably will have to go to E Rated tires as your stock tires will be right at the limit. Also, if you plan on having folks in your truck with you, you will be well over the rear axle limit on your truck. Not saying you couldnt do it, but man you are pushing the limits hard. My rear axle loaded is 4120...your setup is about 400 pounds heavier on the hitch than mine...you are at 4520 with only yourself in the truck. You are already over listed max axle weight. I think you would have trouble with this unit.
If you can mount the fiver hitch somewhat forward of the rear axle you will move a few hundred pounds to the front tires; that would help. Then use a slider hitch if you need tight turn capability.
You will need to do some good research ... and make up your own mind. Keep us posted...

Reason: add weights...
However, my final thought is that I wonder if loading your trailer with your toys will actually decrease your hitch weight based on the location of the load behind your trailer axles. Do some research...that may be why they start out with such a high dry hitch weight on your unit?

I found that with my TT toy hauler with 1200 lbs of weight from 2 quads the hitch weight did not change much I think it was like a hundred pounds at most as the axles are so far back it does not teater touter the weight from front to back but the trailer axles just take all the weight from the cargo you put in the back . I also found the dry tongue and axle weight listed was way off from reality . I would want to weigh it all decked out with all the options you want before you buy any thing like that . As mine had a listed dry weight of 6750 lbs but with options and loaded up with 2 quads and 100 gallons of water plus supplies for 2 ( food cloths and misc ) for a total weight of 12 500 lbs . It's not that the tundra won't tow it but you will be over weight in every way and get 7 mpg at best .
In the end I would say either don't buy it or get a diesel as once you get into the big trailers you will finally see a huge mileage and power difference .

That is way too much trailer for the Tundra. That trailer will weigh 9400 lbs with no liquids or toys in it. I'd bet you a dime on a donut that it weighs well over 10,000 lbs with any cargo. And the hitch weight already exceeds your cargo capacity by 30%. Find something smaller or get a bigger truck.
