This is a discussion thread titled "Large boat towing", within the Towing forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I'm thinking about getting a 30' Boston Whaler walk around boat. The dry weight of the boat is 7400, the motors are 1400, water and fuel approx. 2000, and I have no idea how much the trailer weighs. I plan on getting airbags and E rated tires, but see that i'm over the towing limit already prior to any gear. I'm thinking I will have about 300-500 in gear. I would tow it on a regular basis each weekend for about 1 hour each way, and 6 hours each way every few months. It seems like a no brainer to upgrade to a 3/4 ton diesel, but I have to ask if anyone else does this on a regular basis. I know a lot of people tow TT or 5rs, and don't know if boats are much different. I'm not too eager to get into a diesel right now.

If I did my math right you are at 10,800 lbs without the weight of the trailer.
I think you better re-think this one. The Tundra is a very capable 1/2 ton truck but your GCVW will be WAY over the limit.

Thanks for the input. The wife won't let me get a smaller boat (sounds strange). She needs room for all her crap and the 3 dogs. Sounds like I will have to get a new truck and a boat now. At least I don't have to explain it to the wife. I wished I could keep the boat at the slip, but Lake Mead is not the lake I want to go to every weekend. The 6 hour trip would be somewhere on the coast of San Diego.
Thanks again. I kind of knew what the responses would be ahead of time. I never realized these boats were so heavy compared to a travel trailer.
What kind of truck are you going to be looking at????
Probably a 3/4 ton Chev with the Duramax/Allison Combo. I'm not a fan of dodge, and haven't heard anything good about the Ford diesel. I'm not interested in a 3/4 ton gasser. Any suggestion are welcome.
