Question Towing wires???

I don't get it and can't figure it out.
Why does my 00 tundra have 4 pin and the 03 have 7 pin? What does the additional 3 pin on the 03 do? Do I need the 7 pin if I'm gonna tow a trailer with electric brakes? Can I change/convert my 4 pin to a 7 pin? Anything else I need to know about this 7 pin?

4 pin sound weak. I want 7 pin but first I need to know.

Thanks in advance.

Most electric-brake equipped trailers use a 6-pin,and they do make a 4-to-6 converter harness (I just bought one). Things like horse trailers use a 7-pin,the extra connector is for auxiliary power.

So then can I buy the 7 pin of the 03's and will be a direct hook up to my 00? Or is it more to that.

I don't know the answer to your question, but I did look at several new 03's on a lot yesterday. There were two styles of hitches being used. The more expensive one was heavier looking and the rear bumper bolted to it all along the bottom edge of the hitch tube. It had a 7 wire plug. The cheaper hitch had a tube that was forward of the bumper and had a 4 wire pigtail for the wiring hook up.

Pre-2003 don't have the harness for the brake controller wire or aux wire running back to the rear of the truck. Also you need to pickup a source for the backup lights.
